The Cue
CPS Fine Arts, Vol.2 Issue 2 - Jan. 14th, 2019
I wondered when winter would arrive.
This snowy day has given me a chance to catch up on some todos and begin thinking about the next school year. Coordinators and Directors have been tasked with having budget requests for next year by the end of the month. Soon after Meetings are beginning to start in earnest regarding FTE needs and schedules. If you have questions or needs please let me know and I will do my best to accommodate. Capital requests will be due soon after the start of February. You will want to look for future links in order to share those capital requests.
Looking forward, we have a busy week with continued learning and implementation of Standards Referenced Grading and two more instrument enrollment evenings. In future collaboration sessions, we will continue our development of our CPS Fine Arts Mission and Vision statement have it written prior to the end of this year. I will be meeting with community Arts Groups and District Wide Administrators to get their input in February. I would love to put together a group of parents and student leaders to gather their input. If you have any suggestions on who would be a good person to contact please let me know.
Have a great week!
James
Strengths Focus - Consistency
The Theme that says...Balance is important to you!
You are keenly aware of the need to treat people the same, no matter what their station in life, so you do not want to see the scales tipped too far in any one person's favor. In your view, this leads to selfishness and individualism. It leads to a world where some people gain an unfair advantage because of their connections or their background or their greasing of the wheels. This is truly offensive to you. You see your self as a guardian against it. In direct contrast to this world of special favors, you believe that people function best in a consistent environment where the rules are clear and are applied to everyone equally. This is an environment where people know what is expected. It is predictable and evenhanded. It is fair. Here each person has an even chance to show his or her worth.
Power and Edge
People with strong Consistency talents can easily and quickly make judgments that are fair to everyone involved. As a result, others have confidence in them and see them as trustworthy. They can develop policies and procedures that help teams and organizations maintain their integrity while accomplishing their mission.

If this is me...
- Make a list of consistent rules by which you can live. These rules might be based on certain values that you have or on certain policies that you consider "non-negotiable" within your organization. Counterintuitively, the clearer you are about these rules, the more comfortable you will be with individuality within these boundaries.
- Seek opportunities or roles in which you can be a force for leveling the playing field. At work or in your community, you can be a leader in helping provide disadvantaged people with the platform they need to show their true potential.
- Cultivate a reputation for pinpointing those who deserve the credit. Ensure that respect is always given to those who truly performed the work. You can become known as the conscience of your organization.
- Partner with someone with a strong Maximizer or Individualization theme. This person can remind you when it is appropriate to accommodate individual differences.
- Keep your focus on performance. Occasionally, the Consistency theme might lead you to overemphasize how someone gets work done and ignore what he or she accomplishes.

Important Note Regarding Change to the ABCD Calendar
The day following Martin Luther King Jr day, January 22, this will now be a C day. Friday, January 18, is an A day. We will be skipping over a B day. This will help re-align the calendars between secondary and elementary with the least amount of impact on teachers and student learning. Please help communicate with your building colleagues and talk with your principal should you have any questions.

Columbia Fund for Academic Excellence
Each year, educators in the Columbia Public Schools are eligible for cash awards distributed through the Columbia Fund for Academic Excellence. Principals and other supervisors are asked to be responsible for helping to inform all appropriate persons. The following materials are attached for your use:
- General information about the awards and selection procedure (CFAE Details).
- A memo to staff members (CFAE Memo). Please distribute a copy to each certificated staff member.
- The form to be used for making nominations (CFAE Nomination Form). Nominations from within the school district must come from principals, assistant principals, or other supervisors. The form is set up as a Microsoft Word form, so it can be completed on a computer and then printed for signature. This blank form can also be printed and distributed to parents or other district patrons.
- A list of guidelines to be followed when submitting nominations (CFAE Nomination Guidelines).
One award will be given each year in the category "Outstanding Educator in a Specialized Area." Specialized areas could include, but would not be limited to, extracurricular activities, counseling, media, and others.
Teaching fellows are not eligible for this award.
Members of the Selection Committee are responsible for the nomination and selection of the Outstanding Administrator of the Year. Nominations in this category will not be accepted. Support for a particular administrator may be conveyed to Dr. Jill Brown for elementary education support or Randy Gooch for secondary education support.
Parents, or others in the community, may pick up a form from you to use in making nominations directly to the Selection Committee. Forms are also available at the Administration Building at the front desk.
The completed nomination packets will not be shared with anyone other than the Selection Committee. If you would like to share a copy of the nomination and supporting materials with the person you are nominating, please make a copy before sending the packet to the central office.
If additional information or clarification is needed, contact any member of the Selection Committee (Jill Brown, Randy Gooch, Carla London or Nickie Smith).
Empty Bowls Project
A joint project of the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture, Access Arts, and the local food pantries needs your help! Volunteers are needed to make hand-made bowls for a fundraiser called Empty Bowls taking place on Friday, March 15, 2019. All the proceeds of this special project and the community meal support CCUA’s “Planting for the Pantry” project that takes fresh produce to local pantries and provides hands-on education opportunities for kids and beginning farmers.
Here’s how it works:
1. Your group of 10-20 people will schedule a time to make clay bowls in the Ceramic studio at Access Arts. Bowl-making sessions are available in January and February, and take about 90 minutes to complete. Participants are asked to pay $5 per bowl to cover the material costs.
2. Access Arts’ staff and volunteers will fire, glaze, and re-fire the bowls in the lead up to the event.
3. Join the CCUA at the New Agriculture Park March 15th for the FREE community meal.
4. Attendees at Empty Bowls can buy a handmade bowl for a suggested $20. These funds will support CCUA’s “Planting for the Pantry” campaign to provide fresh produce to local pantries.
5. Everyone wins!
Scheduling a time with Access Arts: Contact Jennifer at AccessArts@schoolofservice.edu with “Empty Bowls 2019” in the subject line to schedule your date today!

Crowd Source Funding Approval and Request Process
Attached is the procedure and form for crowdsource funding. This process and document were created with input from teachers and leaders. The reason for the process is to make sure that when CPS employees pursue crowdsource funding (GoFundMe, for example), and use CPS in their request for funds, there is a process to confirm the funds were used in how they were intended and requested.
This is a change and will require some additional planning when using crowdsource funding opportunities.
