Monomers
Monomers of carbohydrates are called monosaccharides. Monosaccharides are also many different kinds of sugar. Ex. Glucose, Fructose, Galactose
Carbohydrate Examples
Functions of Carbohydrates
The three main functions of carbs are storing energy, giving structural support, and allowing cell-cell communication.
Functional Groups Found in Carbs
How does its structure allow for its function?
Structural polymers like cellulose and chitin are almost impossible to digest, making them fit for structural support. Polymers like galactose and glucose come in a variety of different 3D shapes which allow it to connect to protein and lipids. Carbohydrates like starch and glycogen are used as a source of energy because of its' ability to break down and dissolve easily.
