What is Stroke?
When a person has stroke the supply of blood to the brain has been blocked or blood has leaked into the brain tissue. Brain cells in the affected area die often resulting in serious permanent damage. Prompt medical attention can increase survival chances and can minimize the amount of disability.
Factors associated with Stroke
Stroke is a leading cause of death. More than 20.5 million strokes occur worldwide each year. About 700,000 Americans and 50,000 Canadians suffer a stroke each year with 275,000 and 16,000 deaths respectively. About 70% of Americans who have strokes are over 65. At all ages more women than men have stroke, African Americans have a much higher risk than other ethnic groups. People who have already had a stroke more likely to have another. Most victims have high blood pressure and atherosclerosis. Other risk factors include cigarette smoking, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, lack of exercise, and family history of stroke.
