St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 1 | WEEK 8 | 25 MARCH 2021
God made you and God made me,
he made the world for us to see.
God loves you and long ago,
he sent his Son to tell us so.
Jesus showed us many things,
to love and share and dance and sing.
To learn and pray, to help and care,
he promised he'd always be there.
He died but then came back to life,
let's celebrate for he's alive!
Amen.
From the Principal
Dear St Columba’s school community,
Last week was a big week of celebrations and recognitions. We held our first Mission Day on St Patrick’s Day with students invited to wear green and bring a gold coin donation. The students did a fabulous job and raised over $500 for the Lord Mayors Bushfire Appeal. The Feast of St Joseph was a lovely, reflective day with liturgies held at the Chapel at the Convent with Sister Maree Riddler.
Harmony Day was another celebration of the wonderful cultural diversity that we have at St Columba’s. I was amazed at the various traditional clothing students were dressed in! This was truly a magnificent sight to see and I’m fairly sure most cultures from around the world were represented.
Nothing is better than a friendly staff versus students cricket match. The game was held today at lunchtime and was a fun and high-spirited game, led my Sir Donald Beinsman (aka Mr Beins), with the Sport Ministry presenting the winning team a golden mini cricket bat. Unfortunately, the runner-up’s received a very large tissue! Thank you to the Year 6 class for organising this entertaining event and winning the match!
This Sunday is Palm Sunday, also known as Passion Sunday. In Christian tradition, this is the first day of Holy Week and commemorates Jesus’ triumphant arrival into Jerusalem, days before he was crucified. Palm Sunday is known as such because we will often receive palm fronds at Mass which are used to participate in the re-enactment of Jesus' arrival into Jerusalem. In the Gospels, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a young donkey, and to the lavish praise of the townspeople who threw clothes, palms or small branches, in front of him as a sign of homage. This was a customary practice for people of great respect. Please take the time over the weekend to reflect with your family on the significance of Palm Sunday as we head into Holy Week.
Wishing everyone a lovely weekend!
God Bless
