Legal Work Experience for Solicitors
AS First is an exciting programme open to Aspiring Solicitors members across the UK and will ensure our members build the knowledge and confidence to to kickstart their legal career.
The programme is designed and delivered by our employability experts and future trainees who have recently successfully navigated the legal recruitment process. Participants in AS First will benefit from Aspiring Solicitors employability conferences, workshops and one-to-one mentoring/coaching.
What’s involved?
We will hold workshops across the country. The workshops will focus on:
- Understanding the different types of law firms;
- Opportunities available;
- CV workshop;
- Events with our partner law firms from February-April 2019;
- Legal work experience with our corporate partners; and
- A fast track onto our unique AS Aspire mentoring scheme!
When is the programme?
The 2019 programme will run from February to April 2019.
Conference dates are:
- Thursday 21 February (Bristol)
- Wednesday 27 February (Manchester)
- X February X TBC (London)
- x February X TBC (Birmingham)
Our events, workshops and one-to-one coaching from former Graduate Recruitment Mangers and lawyers will begin in March 2019.
Eligibility
To apply for this programme you must:
- Be an Aspiring Solicitors member who is either (i) in their first year of a three year undergraduate Law degree (ii) in their second year of a four year undergraduate Law degree, or (iii) in their penultimate year of a non-law degree;
- Want to pursue a legal career at a commercial law firm;
- be an Aspiring Solicitors member from one of our four underrepresented groups;
- You must not have accepted a training contract with any law firm or legal team; and
- You must have an interest in pursuing a legal career at a commercial law firm.

Research internship with United Nations
Interns undertake duties, supporting the work of a team for a specific report, under the supervision of an Evaluation and Inspection Officer. The intern will be assigned to different tasks depending on the status of implementation of the annual work programme of the Unit.
Interns will be requested to assist the Inspector(s) in the research work related to on-going projects of the annual work programme. Interns can also be involved in supporting future work programmes and other internal tasks of the Unit.
Internships are intended to promote a better understanding of international problems among participants and to provide them with an insight into the work of the United Nations.

Humans of St Andrews: Careers & Connections from Around the World
We are pleased to invite you to join us for our winter careers networking nights, Humans of St Andrews. You will hear from panels comprised of alumni and parents as we celebrate the St Andrews community abroad, while providing the opportunity to network with fellow students, as well as alumni, parents, employers and friends of the University with a wide variety of career experiences and opportunities in your area.

Internships in China with the British Council
Give yourself the edge when applying for jobs with a two-month industry internship in China. You can choose your own sector, which of six booming cities you want to work in, as well as a start date that suits you. Internships are available in a wide-range of leading industry sectors such as finance, business, marketing, law, engineering, media, technology and many more! Generation UK – China funding will cover all placement fees, accommodation, comprehensive travel insurance, business and cultural activities, as well as dedicated support throughout your placement.
Am I Eligible? Applicants must be:
• Aged 18 years and above
• Currently enrolled full-time at a UK university or have graduated from a UK university within the past year
• Be a UK or EU passport holder (for NI domiciled, British or Irish passport holder)
• Achieved or on track to achieve a 2:1
• You must also meet at least one of our student finance eligibility criteria, which vary based on the year in which you started your course and which institution you study at.

Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York Scholarships 2019-20
Applying for graduate study in the US for academic year 2019-20?
Up to two scholarships (of up to $35,000 each) will be awarded for one year of study in any subject, normally within a radius of 250 miles from New York City or within the area of Washington DC, by the Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York.
Candidates must be Scottish by birth or recent descent and be first degree graduates of either 2018 or 2019. University of St Andrews students have been successful in applying for these scholarships in the past.
Eligible University of St Andrews students and graduates can email careers@st-andrews.ac.uk for further information and an application pack, using the subject ‘Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York Scholarships.’
The deadline for applications (including two academic referees) is Friday 15 February 2019.
