What We're Learning
So far we're learning about the layers of the earth and leading into plate tectonics. Very soon we'll be getting into volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis. I've been so impressed not only with how much prior knowledge the students have brought in with them, but how quickly they are picking up the new stuff. Everyone is really excited about this unit!

If 2nd-5th graders are bringing devices to Challenge, please make sure they have a QR reader already installed. We will also be using an app called TeleStory in a few weeks. I know it's available on Apple devices, but I'm not sure about Android. Canvas has an app that might be beneficial at home.
We will be using Canvas pretty much every week. Most of the Canvas assignments will be done during class while we are in the computer lab, but occasionally they will have a "home learning" assignment that is expected to be completed at home prior to their next Challenge day. Assignments on Canvas are scored, and the assignments will vary between online discussions, quizzes, projects, and more. Canvas can be accessed through mykaty.katyisd.org.

Fall Challenge Get-Together
I was thinking about having a little Challenge family get-together on a Saturday at Stephen F Austin State Park to do some community service by helping to clean up the park, as well as having a little geocaching fun. If you're interested, fill out the form below, and I'll let everyone know soon if there's enough interest.
Rylander is in the process of forming DI teams! We currently only have one 4th grade parent who has volunteered to be a team manager, which means so far, we'll only be able to have 1 team from RRE. We need parent volunteers! KISD is great about training new team managers, so you don't have to have any experience. Once the teams are formed, the students will be doing all the work to solve the challenge, so you'll just be supervising with the other parents. For more information, or to sign up as a Team Manager or student participant, please see my website. The deadline to sign up is September 28.
