Loveland's Expectations
Be Safe
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
Dear Loveland Families,
It is hard to believe we are already approaching the end of 2021 and will be moving quickly into a new year! I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy holiday season. The holiday season is a great time for reflection and appreciation. I am very thankful for all of our students and their families. The students bring so much energy and fun to our building. They make it a great place to come to work everyday. I am also extremely thankful for our staff at Loveland. Their commitment and passion for their students is inspiring to me. I love being in the classrooms and seeing all of the amazing things our students do during the school day. Please enjoy the time with your families during the holiday season.
Ms. Hornung

LUNCH ACCOUNT
Remember to set up your child's lunch account through My School Bucks. This is an easy way to add money for a la carte items or extra portions, for your child's favorite lunch items. They will thank you for that. When setting up your child(ren) you will need their student ID, which you can obtain by calling the front office.

Recess
To ensure students can both enjoy the snow and keep warm and dry once they come inside, we wanted to remind you of a few expectations for students wishing to play in the snow.
- Students need to wear proper coats, gloves, and hats. When feels like temperature is above 10º we will be going outside.
- If students wish to walk in deep snow, they will be expected to wear snow boots.
- For very deep snow or if students wish to roll and play in the snow, students will need snow pants to ensure they stay warm and dry.
- If students wish to build with snow they must have gloves or mittens.
- When recess equipment is slick or wet, access may be restricted to promote student safety.
We appreciate your support in going over these expectations with your child. Teachers will do so as well so that students may have a fun and safe time during winter recess.

All are welcome! We hope to see you there!

Holiday Assistance
It’s hard to believe but the holiday season is right around the corner. As part of the Westside Community Schools family, we are fortunate to have some groups and organizations that are generous in many ways, especially when it comes to helping children.
Each year, several churches in the community, community service clubs, and individual donors offer to help students whose families may be experiencing some temporary financial setbacks due to the tough economic times. These groups often donate a food basket, clothing and/or gifts. These items are meant to assist you in what you are already providing for your family.
If your family is not receiving assistance from other organizations, we are here to provide
support. If you need assistance during the holiday season, please contact Courtenay Gnader, School Psychologist, at gnader.courtenay@westside66.net.
A Winter Weather Update from Dr. Lucas
As we enter another winter season, we wanted to share some reminders and updates on how we make decisions about whether to have school on inclement weather days.
We take these decisions very serious and try to make the decision and announcement as early as we can to help families plan. Sometimes, we feel it is best to wait until early morning to make a decision as storms sometimes move in and change overnight. We hope to always make announcements by 5:30 AM after we have driven roads, checked side streets, received updated forecasts, etc.
Please understand that every family’s circumstances are different….whether children have to walk to school or not, have to wait at a bus stop, can carpool with others, can get a ride from grandma, etc. If you disagree with our decision to have school on a questionable day, please remember that you can always elect to keep your child(ren) home that day.
SNOW DAYS will be traditional snow days again this year. We will not have extended campus learning on snow days.
COLD DAYS are days in which we cancel school due to extreme cold/wind chill, when we are placed in a Windchill WARNING. We will likely have school when we are placed in a Windchill Advisory, as it is not as severe as a Wind Chill Warning. We will factor in how long the sustained and consistent windchill warning is in effect, existing snow/ice on roads, etc.
2-HOUR LATE STARTS may be utilized from time to time but not something we plan to use often. It might come in handy the day after a snow day where we received lots of snow and might need additional time to clean parking lots, allow teenage drivers some extra time and sunlight to get to school, etc. Everything just backs up 2-hours; buses would run accordingly. If your child usually gets picked up at their bus stop at 7:20 AM on a regular day, they would get picked up at 9:20 AM on a 2-hour late start day.
Again, we remind you that if we decide to have school on a day that you feel is too dangerous, please do what you think is best for your child(ren) and keep them home. We will do our best to make timely and efficient decisions.
Best Wishes,
Mike Lucas

COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics
The Douglas County Health Department has asked Westside and other area school districts to share the following link regarding upcoming COVID-19 vaccination clinics for children ages 5-12 who may now be eligible to receive it. CLICK HERE for their complete list.
Our district hosted a COVID-19 vaccination clinic on Saturday, November 20; we will also host a second dose vaccine clinic on December 11 from 10:00am until 2pm at Westside Middle School. This is a walk-in clinic and appointments are not needed. This site is open to children ages 5 through 11, as well as those 12 years and older interested in receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
We understand this a personal choice for your family and encourage you to discuss at home and with your family doctor. For additional information about Westside’s response and protocols related to the COVID-19 pandemic, please click here to visit the special section on our website.
If you have additional questions about anything related to COVID-19 and Westside Community Schools guidelines, please email feedback@westside66.net.
Note from the Nurse
It's cold and flu season. Please remember to practice healthy habits at home.
- Get plenty of rest.
- Eat healthy foods.
- Sneeze into the elbow.
- Wash hands often.
When children are ill, we expect that they will be kept home until they are fever-free and symptom-free without medicine for 24 hours.
Wednesday Dismissal
Every Wednesday we will end the school day at 3:00 pm instead of 3:30 pm. This gives our teachers throughout the district collaboration time by attending weekly professional learning communities. Please plan accordingly to pick your child up at 3PM.
2022 Battle of the Books
Mark your calendars to join us for the 2022 Battle of the Books on March 19, 2022 at Westside Middle School! This annual Westside district tradition provides an opportunity for teams of 3-5 students in 4th-6th grade to participate in a quiz bowl-style competition where they answer questions based on content from the 2021-2022 Golden Sower nominees.
Please visit our FAQ or Rules pages for more information about the event. Registration will be in October. Happy reading!
