Thornhill Elementary PFC Newsletter
Volume 27, Issue 26, February 25, 2020
From the Principal
Dear Thunderbird families,
If today's weather is any indication of what is in store for spring you can count me in! I know it's wishful thinking but these clear, sunny and warm days have just been too good to ignore. Our kids are having fun in the sun and you should too. With five weeks away from spring break I hope you have given thought and made plans to restore and replenish. There are so many great outdoor opportunities in the Bay Area that all I can say is we are lucky! Last weekend I walked across the Golden Gate Bridge for sunrise. I can’t recommend it enough.
At Thornhill we have amazing people working for the kids. And it’s evident that teachers go above and beyond to support their students. This year the Amazing Teachers awards go to the Thornhill Kindergarten Team! Their can-do spirit is awe inspiring! If you don’t know them, they are: Allia Calkins, Bonnie Forbes, and Nancy Steimle. Let them know just how awesome they are, because they rock! Thank you Nancy, Bonnie and Allia for your superstar dedication to our kids.
Have a great week and take care. I leave you with a picture and quote from Dr. Martin Luther King.
Mr. Daubenspeck
P.S. We have a PFC meeting in two weeks on Monday, March 9 from 6-7pm. We'll start to talk about important budget items, so I hope to see many of you there.

The Online Auction Opens Friday, February 28!
We still have a few weeks until the Auction, but start training those bidding muscles now with the 2020 Online Auction, which starts this Friday, February 28 and will go through March 6 at 8pm. We have over *50* items to bid on which you can view here. Get that deal or put in money towards a good cause - our kids!
We’ll kick off bidding on awesome items like an American Girl doll, museum excursions, and seats to watch the Warriors play the Hawks on March 25 at the Chase Center!
At the auction itself be sure to test your luck at our fabulous games of chance:
- Get a Golden Ticket and try for your choice of a live auction item. $100 each. Only 50 available.
- Buy a key to our Wine Slammer. If your key opens the lock you take home 2 cases of premium wine. Keys are $50. Only 50 available.
- Guess your way to a night at the Claremont Hotel in this year’s Heads or Tails. $30 secures your entry.
P.S. Saturday March 7 is your absolute last day to buy tickets to the Auction. You have just over 2 weeks to find that babysitter and join us for a night of Flappers and Fedoras!

About the Thornhill Newsletter
The Thornhill Parent-Faculty Club (PFC) eNews team publishes this weekly newsletter each Tuesday in the school year to communicate school, PFC and OUSD news, events and information.
Email submissions to our Newsletter Chair, Evie Nagy, at newsletter@thornhillschool.org by 8 p.m. Thursday for approval—nothing sent after this will be included in the following week’s newsletter unless there are extremely compelling extenuating circumstances. It’s fine to include text in the body of the email with links and no formatting, and attach photos preferably as 150 x 150, 72 dpi JPG or GIFs only (not embedded in email or Word file). Submissions may be edited for spelling, grammar, brevity and clarity. Advertising and items not related to Thornhill are not accepted, as we need to keep the newsletter focused on need-to-know info for the community.
THANK YOU to everyone who submits articles and to PFC Board Members, Teachers, VP of Communications Erin Proudfoot, PFC President Rex Crum, and Principal Steve Daubenspeck. Member of Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).
