Culture of Guinea-Bissau


Guinea- Bissau's population is 1.4 million and is growing annually at a rate of 1.99 percent.Only 20 percent live in urban areas. More than 40 percent is younger then 15 years old. Guinea-Bissau is known as the melting pot of the west, home with at least 13 major groups with distinct languages.


Most families will eat three meals if they can afford it. During the rainy season many families may only eat once or twice. An urban breakfast will be eaten between 7 and 9 a.m., luch will be eaten between noon and 3 p.m., and dinner between 8 and 10. In America breakfast is known to be the most important meal of the day but for them it is lunch. Family members eat separately according to their sex and age. You are supposed to eat with your right hand and use your left hand as personal hygeine.

Dating and Marrige

Young women often marry in their teens. The birth of a child marks a couple of "married". Fees and documentation requirements for a licensed marrage it costs more money then a average person has. Islamic law allows a man to have as many as four wives!


Soccer is the nations most popular sport. People like to take an advantage and of a short workday during the rainy season to attend soccer matches. Some urban residants enjoy basketball and tennis. However, the most common leisure activity is sitting under a shady tree.
