News From the Office

Stay Safe

Thanks for completing the daily health survey. Mr.Renner does review these daily and cross-check absences along with making calls about discrepancies. Thanks for taking the time, your honesty, and keeping all of us safe.

Note From The Office

Our Families Are Amazing!

THANK YOU for all the donations coming into the office and the classrooms! Your generosity is much appreciated! Also, a big thank you to the Gatza family for providing a case of water for each classroom so students that may have forgotten their water bottle have a way to stay hydrated! It was so kind of you to see this need and make the donation! Our Spencer Families are truly AMAZING!

Extra Change of Clothing

With the current COVID restrictions, we are not able to offer a change of clothes if your child has an accident, or stumbles in a mud puddle, or gets a nose bleed, or has a mishap in the cafeteria...therefore, it would be helpful if you kept a change of clothing in your student's backpack. If your student does not have spare clothes, we will be calling home to have you bring a change of clothing. Thanks for your assistance with this.

What Does Lost & Found Look Like This Year?

We do not have an official Lost & Found area this year, so items found around the school or on the playground are being placed on the picnic table outside the cafeteria doors. Please take a moment to look at the pictures below to see if you are missing any of these items and you can come up to Spencer to pick them up.

Picture Day is Coming

SMILE! Picture Day for our In-Person Roadrunners will be on Tuesday, October 13th. Picture Day for our Virtual (BVA) Roadrunners will be on Wednesday, October 14th from 9AM-Noon in the Multi-Purpose Room at Spencer. Our Picture Re-take Day is scheduled for December 1st. Picture ordering information to order online along with the Picture ID is below. If you prefer not to order online, order forms will be coming home the week prior to picture day and I will attach a copy in the Oct. 9th issue of the Scoop.

Note From the PTO

Annual Spencer T-Shirts

The beginning of the school year typically brings about our first fundraiser for the year, and along with it, our annual class t-shirts. Obviously, this year is going to look a little different. We will not be doing fundraising or asking for donations this year. Thanks to your generosity in past years, we have a bit of a surplus to get us through this year comfortably. That being said, the PTO will be giving each student (in-person and BVA) and staff member a class shirt. We ask that you please take a moment to fill out this form for each of your students so that they receive the proper size. (Please, no parent shirt orders this year.)

Our first PTO Book of the Month is in! The PTO will be setting up a table on picture day to get them to you. If you are not planning on attending picture day, please contact Jen Lumsden to work out a time to pick up the book for your student.

For those new to Spencer: Each month, the PTO purchases a book for every student and teacher at Spencer. In-Person students will be handed out in class.

Resources from the DNR

The COVID 19 pandemic has added uncertainty and stress to all of our lives. Parents and teachers are adjusting to “getting back to school” either in person or virtually—and each week brings challenges and changes to the plan. With five of my own school-age children, I’ve experienced both in-person and virtual learning and the struggles that each of those bring.

In a normal year, DNR visitor center staff would be shifting focus to providing school education programs and hosting field trips for about 60,000 students. But this year, teachers have asked for other options. Our education team developed Nature at School –a series of live, virtual lessons with Michigan students whether they are in classrooms or at home.

These presentations include pre/post visit materials, correlate to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and incorporate important agency messaging. Best of all, we bring some of our state’s most amazing public lands to their school/home. Fourth graders in Detroit can learn about biodiversity from the Porkies and a high school in Kalamazoo can learn about forestry from Hartwick Pines.

Feel free to pass this along to teachers and parents in your community. These are free programs conducted by your DNR colleagues. Check out the website www.michigan.gov/natureatschool or share this video: https://youtu.be/F3msDJSwGbQ.
