What's New In C2

January 3rd-12th

A Happy New Year from C2 to YOU!

As we wrap up our author study on Jan Brett, we have learned how authors use illustrations to help readers understand the overall plot of the story (RL 2.7). If you haven't had a chance to read one of her books it's a must on the Christmas list! Her amazing attention to detail in her illustrations helps the book truly come alive!

We have been learning how to infer the main idea of Narrative text. We will also learn how authors use key details to support the main idea of a text. Next week we will focus on learning how to determine the main idea of a multi-paragraph text and the focus of specific paragraphs.

Learners will also take a closer look at characters within a text by analyzing how the author introduces the characters, describes them, and develops their character and personalities throughout the story.

Other things you can work on:

Identifying and using nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs - This is a skill that gets practiced every week during mentor sentences.

Cursive- We have all officially begun teaching cursive! You can assist your child with this by helping them practice their lowercase letters at home!

All learners have been working hard learning addition. Some have started subtraction and others will start soon! Please work with your child on the progression of adding and subtracting. Start by adding/subtracting within 100 and moving towards 1000. They also need to be able to know when they will need to regroup.

Current standards:

2.NBT.5: I can add and subtract two-digit numbers. (ex. 34+78 72-38)

2.NBT.6: I can add up to four 2-digit numbers. (ex. 23+45+89+17)

2.NBT.B.7 I can use strategies to add numbers within 1000 and know when to regroup. (ex. 367+892)

2.NBT.B.7 I can use strategies to subtract numbers within 1000 and know when to borrow. (ex. 612-398)

Other things you can work on:

Fact Fluency- Use flash cards, Front Row, or you can ask your child various single digit math facts

Money- knowing the value of each coin, learning to add them up

Time- to the nearest 5 minutes or minute (to the minute would be EVEN better to prepare them for 3rd!)

See the link below for great strategies to help your child practice subtraction with regrouping!

American Symbols Play Pratice

Beginning this week we have begun practicing, as a community, 3 days a week. If your child has a part please make sure they are practicing their lines! This is an exciting opportunity for us as a community and we can't wait for our final production date on February 22nd.

Does Your Child Have A Part In The Play?

Parents, if your child has a part in the play you are responsible for creating a costume! This is where your child gets to be creative! We would like all costumes turned in by February 16th.
