Report Cards:
Today marks the end of Quarter 3 and report cards will be coming home this afternoon. This is a great opportunity to celebrate successes from the past quarter in addition to setting goals to finish up the school year on a strong note.
Battle of the Books:
On April 13th, at Mt. Hebron High School, thirty of our fifth-grade students participated in the Howard County Battle of the Books competition. Per the Howard County Library website, “Battle of the Books gets fifth grade students excited about reading. A lively academic competition, Battle of the Books improves reading comprehension, builds vocabulary, and teaches teamwork and good sportsmanship.”
These 30 amazing fifth graders worked in six groups at home and during their recess time with Mrs. O’Connor and Mrs. Hastings, reading a series of twelve books numerous times and becoming “experts” on many of them. At the battle, they competed against 55 other teams of students from surrounding elementary schools in our county, answering questions with 245 of their peers. In the end, Lisbon Elementary won second place awards: Best Team Spirit and Overall Winner.
CONGRATULATIONS to all six of our Lisbon Teams. The teams were:
Fearless Fierce Fluffy Reading Pandas - Gabriel Alas, Zach Coughlin, Edward Johnson, Tyler Nunn and Thomas Roach (Second Place Overall Score – book knowledge; Second Place Team Spirit Award)
Radioactive Rhino Riding Readers - Giovanny Bastian, Shane DuBois, Garrett Gleaves, Jack Magnolia, Vishvarupa Sivam
Rockin’ Roaring Rainbow Readers - Emily Bonner, Isabella Gick, Hailey Monahan, Makayla Nesbitt, Lana Parks
Rockstar Readers - Cece Cassidy, Molly Miller, Calli Parker, Brooke Walker, Campbell West
Super Spy Readers - Natalie Davis, Sophie Nebel, Elizabeth Shrader, Tanusha Shukla, Madison Stouffer
Super Zoo Book Squad - Raechel Bosley, Janet Clemons, Lilli Gallagher, Sasha Mitchell, Sydnee Pence
Congratulations to all of our participating students: We are so proud of your hard work and determination!
Take Your Child to Work Day: April 26, 2018

If you wish to take your child to your work, please see the attached form to submit for an excused absence. If you notify us in writing that you are taking your child to work, we can code the absence as a "field trip," and it would be excused for attendance purposes. Please find the form attached.

Waste-free Wednesday:
Join in the fun, and help save the environment! Lisbon Elementary School will be running Waste-Free Wednesdays, beginning on Wednesday April 18th. A group of students calling themselves “The Eco-Friendly Garbologists” have noticed the amount of trash LES creates, and they believe that too much is being thrown away. They hope that a weekly Waste-Free Wednesday is a small way to start to make a difference. The idea is that on Wednesday each week, students and staff are encouraged to pack a lunch that produces zero trash. Pack in re-usable containers, or in eco-friendly recyclables! If you’d like to see how easy it is to pack a waste-free lunch, click here! Together, we can make a difference!KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION IS ONGOING:
Parents of children who will be five as of September 1, 2018 must enroll their children in kindergarten for the 2018-2019 school year. Early Registration took place Monday, March 5-Friday March 9. Parents must come to registration with specific documentation, which can be found on the HCPSS website. Please call the front office to make an appointment at 410-313-5506. Screen-Free Week Challenge
The Maryland General Assembly, Delegate Bob Flanagan, Delegate Trent Kittleman and Senator Gail Bates are inviting the students of Howard County elementary schools in District 9 to participate in the “Screen-Free Week Challenge.” Younger siblings are also encouraged to participate.
They hope that interested students will accept this challenge by giving up television (and other electronic devices with screens, unless it is school-related) for seven consecutive days and engaging themselves in more productive, creative and educational ways to spend their time. This will happen in conjunction with National Screen-Free Week 2018 from April 30th thru May 6th.
Students who successfully complete the “challenge” will receive a personalized certificate. Participants should mail the completed form to the Office of Gail Bates by Friday, June 1st.

Science Fair
Your child is invited to participate in this year’s Science Fair on Monday, May 14th during the Lisbon Lions Lollapalooza from 6:30-8:00 pm. The Lollapalooza is a popular event that showcases the remarkable things our extraordinary students have done this year at Lisbon Elementary School.
If your child is interested in doing a Science Investigation, Collection, or Invention at home, please visit the Lisbon Elementary School website (les.hcpss.org) to download documents with further information and instructions. Once your child has identified a project, also download, complete, and return the Intent to Participate form by Tuesday, May 1st. (If you do not have access to a computer, please request a hard copy of the specific forms you need from Mrs. Drews in the office.)
Students who elect to participate will have their name read on the morning announcements and their name printed and hung on a hallway wall display. Directions on where and when to bring in the projects will be shared in future Lisbon Lines.
We are excited to highlight the commitment shown and the hard work done by the LES students this year. Many thanks for all of your support at home and in the building this year.
* Students in any grade may conduct a Science Investigation to answer a question/problem. Students will use The Scientific Method to learn the systematic approach to solving a problem.
** Students in Kindergarten, First or Second grade may submit a collection. Students will collect and organize something of interest, answering questions related to observations made while exploring their world.
*** Students in any grade may submit an invention. Students will use the engineering design process to create an invention that will solve a problem or answer a question.
PTA County Council Representative
The PTA is in search of a PTA County Council (PTACHC) Representative for next school year. This volunteer would attend a monthly meeting (generally the first Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. until about 9:00 p.m.) at the Homewood School in Ellicott City (next to the Board of Education building—about 20 minutes from Lisbon). After the monthly meetings, the Representative would share feedback with our PTA.
This is a great opportunity for someone interested in the goings on of our highly ranked school system. All PTAs in the county attend each month as well as a representative from the Board of Education. Guest speakers include the superintendent and county-level administration. You would be the first to know what’s going in our schools! PTACHC representatives also vote on positions and policies of the PTA.
If interested, please contact a nominating committee member: Cathy Datz (cathydatz@yahoo.com) Debbie Golden (dmegolden@gmail.com) or Tracey Heller (thh91@msn.com)
