GMSD in Focus
I hope you had a restful Labor Day Weekend. As I look back on last week, there was a lot to get excited about:
Celebrating Personal Excellence: We are immensely proud to celebrate the achievements of 19 exceptional students who have earned AP's highest distinction—the AP Capstone Diploma. This program empowers students to explore their passions through scholarly research, developing critical thinking, research, collaboration, and presentation skills that are essential for their academic journey. We also acknowledged the outstanding dedication of our educators, whose efforts led to top three rankings on state assessments at the Board meeting on Tuesday.
Community Spirit: Our community spirit has been shining brightly, as our Houston High School student section received national recognition as Student Section of the Week. The House Reveal Ceremony at HMS was a fantastic event that showcased the enthusiasm and unity within our school community.
And always remember to maintain your focus on what truly matters—our children. Stay GMSDinFocus.

Superintendent

Remembering Cheryl Estes: A Tribute to a Distinguished Legal Mind
The Germantown Board of Education gathered for a poignant moment at their recent board meeting, one filled with both sorrow and fond reminiscence. They came together to pay homage to Cheryl Rumage Estes, GMSD's board attorney who recently passed away.
About Cheryl Rumage Estes:
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Cheryl was a native of the very community she would later serve. Her journey in education was rooted in Germantown, where she graduated from Germantown High School.
Cheryl's legal career spanned over four decades, all of which she spent with the prestigious law firm now known as Lewis Thomason, P.C. During this time, she became a trusted advisor to a wide range of clients, including employers, universities, school boards, superintendents, educators, and school administrators. Her legal expertise was a guiding light in navigating complex matters that impacted the educational landscape.
In 2018, Cheryl took on a new role as the Germantown Board of Education's attorney. Over the next five years, she proved to be a pillar of strength and wisdom for the board and Germantown Municipal School District. Cheryl's diligence, legal acumen, and unwavering commitment earned her not only admiration but also the profound respect of everyone she served.
As the board attorney, Cheryl served not only as a legal advisor but also as a trusted friend and passionate advocate for public education. Her commitment to the betterment of the community's schools went beyond her professional duties; it was a personal calling for her.
Cheryl Estes was not only a legal luminary but also an active participant in various professional organizations, non-profits, and her church. She lent her expertise and dedication to organizations such as the Memphis and Federal Bar Associations, the Tennessee Bar Foundation, the Federalist Society, the Tennessee Council of School Board Attorneys, the Junior League of Memphis, the Board of Directors for Playhouse on the Square, and Germantown Baptist Church.
In her personal life, Cheryl was the loving wife of her late husband, Jack Estes, II, and the proud mother of two sons, Jack Estes, III (Whitney) and Andrew Estes. She was also the adoring grandmother of Charles, a role that brought immense joy and fulfillment to her life.
In a heartfelt resolution passed at the August 2023 board meeting, the Germantown Board of Education formally recognized Cheryl Estes for her exemplary legal services and expressed its appreciation for her friendship.
AP Testing Results for the Class of 2023 are in!
At Germantown Municipal School District, 19 students have earned the AP Capstone DiplomaTM. The AP Capstone Diploma program helps students develop the critical thinking, research, collaboration, and presentation skills that are crucial for academic success.
"We are delighted to acknowledge the accomplishments of our students who engaged in the AP Capstone Diploma program," stated Jason Manuel, Superintendent. "Our AP Capstone students and educators have demonstrated remarkable commitment to this extensive multi-year academic initiative, allowing them to delve into their interests through rigorous research. This program not only enhances their college readiness but also equips them with valuable skills for their post-high school journey."
To receive the AP Capstone Diploma, students must earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar, AP Research, and on four additional AP® Exams of their choice. To receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate, students must earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research.
Unlike traditional AP subject exams with a single end-of-year assessment, AP Seminar and AP Research assessments are project based and evaluate skills mastery through group projects, presentations, and individual essays completed throughout the year. Instead of focusing on one specific academic discipline, AP Seminar and AP Research are interdisciplinary: students are encouraged to create research projects based on topics of personal interest. Students are assessed on the critical thinking, research, collaboration, time management, and presentation skills needed to complete their projects.
Additionally, 95 students earned the AP Scholar Distinction, 42 students earned the AP Scholar with Honor, 82 students earned the AP Scholar with Distinction, and 3 earned the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. We are proud of the 95 individuals who both challenged themselves and succeeded with the AP coursework!
These were graduating seniors in the class of 2023. A special congratulations to the 19 AP Capstone Diploma Program recipients:

Focus on Aimsweb: Decoding all of the assessments
Throughout the district, students are currently participating in Aimsweb testing, prompting an opportunity to provide families with insights into the nature and purpose of this assessment. Aimsweb serves as a progress monitoring system employed to assess students' academic skills and their progression, with a specific focus on reading, math, and language proficiency. Educators can use Aimsweb data to pinpoint areas where students might require supplementary assistance, shaping instructional strategies and ultimately enhancing student performance.
Houston Middle School Welcomes New Students to its House System Tradition
Special shout-outs go to the new students at Houston Middle School who were recently inducted into their respective houses this week. At Houston Middle School, our unique house system divides students into four distinct houses—Andalusian, Dartmoor, Percheron, and Lippizan. Each house engages in friendly competition, earning points through acts of kindness and active participation in school-spirited initiatives. Adding to the whimsy, interactive television screens in the hallways announce each and every time a student earns a point for their house. Images of house members and dancing GIFs of staff and faculty members interactive with animations as different houses pull into the lead.
Pictured above, newly inducted members of House Lippizan celebrate securing the first Spirit Stick of the school year. Check out their HMSMustangs1 Instagram Page for additional exciting photos and videos later today!
NASA and Aviation in GMSD takes flight
Did you know that on this day in 1977, NASA launched its Voyager I spacecraft to explore Jupiter and Saturn. 55 years later, it is currently the farthest man-made object in Space. On September 11th, Dr. Ann Viano, an associate professor of physics at Rhodes College will be delivering a guest lecture at Houston High to speak about NASA’s latest satellite for all interested high school students. Sign ups are live.
Closer to Earth, our new Aviation program took flight this year. 80 students are enrolled across two levels: Introduction to Aerospace and an advanced Unmanned/Drone Pilot Course at Houston High School. In its initial year, the program has successfully filled two sections each for the beginner Level 1 Course and the advanced Unmanned/Drone Pilot Level 4 Course. This approach ensures a balanced cohort of students progressing through the program, while still catering to Juniors and Seniors. These upperclassmen can explore aviation careers and even obtain a State Approved Industry Credential - the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. Currently, we have two classes available: Introduction to Aerospace, with 47 enrolled students, and Unmanned Systems, with 33 enrolled students.
A Celebration of Outcomes at our August Business Meeting
Each year, the state releases district and school level data for achievement scores. Our data team then uses this information to compare our district to others in the state. GMSD consistently placed in the Top 10 for most grade level and subject areas.
We are extremely proud of all of our teachers and staff. If we could, we would invite ALL of them to our Board meeting – but there aren’t enough chairs. So instead of just sharing data, we want to make sure the spotlight is on the people who made this possible: our teachers. The recognition held on August 29 featured one representative from the grade level and subject area that ranked in the top three in achievement in the entire state.
Additionally, we are recognizing First Grade ELA who met their district goal:

Beyond Books: Recognizing the Remarkable Acts of Kindness by HHS Librarians, Ruthie Wilder and Clint Underwood
In this week's staff spotlight, we want to give a special shoutout to two incredible individuals who go above and beyond in their roles at Houston High School. Ruthie Wilder and Clint Underwood, our dedicated school librarians, not only provide us with a treasure trove of knowledge and inspiration but also show tremendous compassion and thoughtfulness. Their memorial book project, which honors staff members who have lost close family members, is a heartwarming gesture that often goes unnoticed. When Michael Robinson's father passed away last December, the librarians reached out to him with a touching offer to purchase a book in his honor. Together, they selected a book about the New York Yankees. This gesture was a surprise to Michael Robinson who submitted this shoutout. Their kindness during a difficult time reminds us of the beautiful community we have here at our school.
Bravo, toThe Houston Band, who debuted its Fall show at the big game last week.

The freshman/jv team plays tonight at home against Briarcrest at 6:00pm, while the varsity Mustangs return to the field Friday, September 8, at 7:00pm at Cordova. Boys varsity golf defeated ECS at Spring Creek Ranch on August 31, winning 160-190. Senior Zach Olsen was a medalist with +2 (38). Varsity girls golf is up next as they play tomorrow at 1:30pm at Windyke, and the boys will join them on Thursday, September 7, at 1:30pm for the Dragon Invitational at Glen Eagle. Varsity volleyball had a great week as they won 3-0 against both Cordova and St. Mary’s. Tonight they are away at Germantown as freshman, jv, and varsity all take on the Red Devils! Freshman is at 4:00pm, jv at 5:00pm, and varsity at 6:00pm. After being recognized as one of the most consistent programs in Division 1 AAA by TN Milesplit, Cross Country raced in the Twilight Classic this past Saturday. JV plays at 5:00pm, and varsity at 7:00pm.Houston Middle School and Riverdale Volleyball Faceoff
The game on Wednesday, August 30, was a hard fought battle for both teams. Ultimately, the visiting Raiders were victorious. Set one ended 25-20 Raiders, and set two was so close. It came down to 26-24, with the Raiders getting the victory. With a packed crowd, the Mustangs had amazing energy and support, and stats from the game show how close it really was! Both teams not only played an amazing game but showed incredible sportsmanship. While still competing at a high level and both wanting the win, team captains showed great respect for each other, and their love of the game. It was a great night for the GMSD community! Read more about this game on the HMS, Riverdale, or GMSD website as we share our full coverage.
Houston Middle and Riverdale are both busy this week with three games each! HMS will first face Appling Middle tonight away at 5:00pm. Mustang fans - come out and cheer them on! In 2022, she was also an American Cup Champion. In her freshman year, she was named Rookie of the Year, followed by Above and Beyond during her sophomore year. She is always quick to help others, and she is devoted to working hard to help her team succeed. She brings her best to her athletic performance, and in the classroom as well, as a straight A student.
George Church- Houston Middle School, 8th Grade, Cross Country

He has multiple success stories for his time in Cross Country, including being the team MVP last year, winning a state award as a part of last year’s team, and finishing in the top 10 in the state. He is dedicated to improving his own times and overall skills, but he works hard to drive his teammates to do the same. He is always working on his communication skills to ensure that he and his teammates continue to work together and build strong relationships.
Forest Hill Gets Rolling with Tricycle Races to Boost PTO Registration
At Forest Hill, teachers and staff took a fun approach to encourage more families to register for the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO). They aimed to get 100% registration. Last week, staff and parents had tricycle races in the school's bus loop to make the registration drive memorable. If they reach their goal, next week, staff will compete in the annual Lake Race. What does your PTO do to increase membership? Let us know at Let's Talk!
Houston Goes to Hollywood: How You Can Help Celebrate Homecoming This Year
Houston High School is preparing to host its annual homecoming celebration, and once again this year, it's open to the entire community. With the theme "Houston Goes to Hollywood," our students are gearing up for an unforgettable on-campus experience with dress up days and the normal festivities. But that's not all – feeder schools in the district will join in the festivities with a Mustang Spirit Day on Friday, September 29th, showcasing their pride and support for Houston High School.
Furthermore, our dedicated Mustangs will return to feeder schools throughout the week for special volunteer activities, so keep an eye out for them in your carlines and beyond. Additionally, the Student Government Association (SGA) is extending a warm invitation to our younger community members with a special event on Saturday, September 23rd, from noon until 4pm on the football field. As junior vice president Kelly White put it, "We have this idea of hosting a fun, fall carnival-type atmosphere that gives us a chance to make connections with future Mustangs. We want to create a fun, community-building event that is free and enjoyable for our feeders!" So, mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details as we come together to celebrate and strengthen our Houston High School community.
Local businesses can get in on the fun also with the school's Rep the H campaign. All interested in participating are encouraged to reach out to Andrew.Martin@gmsdk12.org or Shannon.Blackburn@gmsdk12.org for more information.
