Habit of the Week-Habit 1 Be Proactive

In TK, we focus on learning to make good choices as we learn about Habit 1, Be Proactive. We use a stoplight to help us to remember this idea. Red means STOP, yellow means SLOW DOWN AND THINK, and green means MAKE A GOOD CHOICE AND GO! As students have the inevitable conflicts that happen in TK, we practice "using our words" to solve problems on our own. Of course, big problems can require an adult's help, but our goal is for children to learn to handle minor conflicts independently.

This week, Sahasra L. was running with several friends toward Ms. Morgan at recess to tell her something about another student. She stopped in her tracks and said, "Hey guys, let's try using our words first!" The group of students turned around and trotted toward another student. Ms. Morgan observed the children speaking together and then going their separate ways to play--problem solved and no adult support necessary. What a teaching win!

Ms. Morgan spoke to Sahasra about the situation a few days later and she said the other child had been running away from her. She told him, "I don't like it when you run away from me" and he apologized. Sahasra said she felt good about being able to solve a problem on her own. Way to be proactive, Sahasra!
