Normanby School Newsletter 11

Sunday 26 July 2020

Principal's Message

Tēnā koutou katoa – Warmest greetings to you all.

Welcome back to Term 3!!

We are looking forward to an awesome term full of learning!

We hope the children had wonderful, restful holidays and are ready for an action packed term. I know many of the children are looking forward to their school sports starting back up this term - they have been so patient. Best of luck to all our Basketball and Netball teams - GO NORMANBY!!!

Thank you to everyone who came along to our Learning Conferences last Thursday. We received lots of positive feedback about our new Hero Reporting App. If you did not manage to see your child's teacher, please make an alternative time as these home/ school learning partnerships are really important for your child and their educational progress.

A huge thank you to Josie Werder who kindly provided the staff with a lovely home cooked dinner on the night of the conferences - this was delicious and much appreciated!

We noticed a huge increase in the number of colds that everyone got at the end of term. This shows how quickly these germs spread in a school setting. Please help us to minimise the spread of germs by keeping your child home if they are unwell. Please let us know if your child is absent. This saves our office staff lots of extra work phoning parents when your child has not shown up for school. Thanks for your support with this.and hopefully more appealing

I am currently trying out some new and hopefully more appealing newsletter designs. Your feedback is always welcome. My goal is to communicate clearly with our school community and make it easier for you to acquire the access the necessary information.

Welcome to our new students

This week we welcomed three new students to Normanby School

Charlie Cleary – she turned 5 years old on Friday 3 July and joined Room 5. Charlie has two siblings here at school as well as her mum, Kerri, who works as one of our amazing Learning Assistants.

Vinzel Evergreen – has joined Room 3 with Ms Ryan. He is a Year 5 student and has just returned from Auckland recently.

Remedy Evergreen-Hornby – has joined Room 8 with Mrs Dravitzki. She is a Year 3 student and is the younger sister of Vinzel.

We look forward to getting to know our new students and their whanau.

School Hours

A reminder that in the last newsletter it was explained that the school hours will be 9am to 3pm for the remainder of this year.

The BOT sent out a survey at the beginning of the holidays (via email) to all families asking for your views about the school hours for 2021. Please make sure you complete the survey – your opinion matters.

The survey closes on Friday 31 July. If you did not get the copy sent to your email address, please let us know and we can send you a link or a paper copy home. A reminder that only one survey is to be completed per household.

Before school and End of School Routine

With Covid19 seemingly no longer a community threat, all parents / whanau are welcome to come onto the school site.

In the morning

  • School starts at 9am
  • Children can arrive at school anytime from 8.30am (not before please).
  • Parents are welcome to come into school at this time as well.
  • You are welcome to stay for our whakatauki, waiata and Jump Jam which starts at 9am

In the afternoon

We would really appreciate it if you would consider all children and the teachers at the end of the day. This is a really important time for packing up and reflecting on the day’s learning.

  • Please ONLY pick up your child early if they have an appointment. Please go directly to the office (normal procedure) to sign your child out and Kay will go and collect your child from their classroom.
  • Please help us by NOT going into the classroom or standing in the hallway at the end of the day as this often distracts the children.
  • Please make arrangements with your child/ren as to where you would like to meet them at the end of the day.
  • All teachers are available at the end of the day if you need a quick chat (if they are not on duty)
  • Ngahere (Room 5 & 6) teachers bring the children to the library at 3pm, for you to collect.
  • Matariki (Room 7 & 8) teachers bring the children to the courtyard between the Hall and Library at 3pm, for you to collect.
  • Puanga (Rooms 2, 3 & 4) children are let out of class at 3pm and they make their way out of the door by the ramp at the front entrance.
  • All school van children meet the duty teachers in Room 6
  • All children who walk on Hunter Street or Grey Street meet the duty teachers in Room 1 at 3pm.
  • All children who cross Waihi Road meet the duty teacher in Room 3 at 3pm. These children MUST wear the High Vis vest they have been given.

We really appreciate your co-operation and consideration. Thank you.

Hero App

We are delighted to be able to launch our new school management system, Hero. We sent out a newsletter earlier this week, explaining how to download and use our new Hero App. This has been a huge work in progress since last year. This will be our “One stop shop”. If you are having trouble accessing this App or need some help please let us know as we are more than happy to help you out. This can be done between 8.30 and 9am and 2.45 to 3.15pm.

In Term 3 the staff will begin posting rich content to our Hero software and we are excited to share this with you to include you in your child’s learning journey.

Our aim has been to implement a robust system that allows teachers, parents, and students to access learning in an online environment that is secure, easy, and effective.

Your home page is the Community Feed. This is where we will post messages, our school newsletters and announcements. In time this will take the place of Skool Loop.

Hero allows teachers to share learning anytime, anywhere and this can be viewed on any device. We are excited about the potential that the software offers. Instead of traditional reports, as the year progresses, teachers will be providing parents with ‘real-time’ reporting as it happens. On the 2020 Report Page you will be able to see your child's current goals, as well as the goals they have achieved and their current progress graphs for reading, writing and maths. The report is designed to build year on year so that over time you will have access to written posts, assessments, images, video and helpful resources all in one place.

In order to sign in you must use the email address you have provided us. This is the email address where you receive your school newsletters. Parents can log in with separate email addresses, however we must have them in the system first. If you would like to do this, please contact Kay with the required email address.

New School Sports Shirt

For some time, we have been discussing a new school sports shirt for parents to purchase. After looking at a variety of designs and prices, thanks to Vicki Roberts and the BOT, we have finally got a sample to show you. These are available in the school office.

We will be taking orders. They are $40 and are of a high quality dri-fit material. The school is charging parents what we pay for them (i.e. no profit – this is about providing you with a service). Payment can be made at the school office or online.

Normanby School Bank Details

TSB 15 3950 0406446 03

Please make sure you write your surname and reference what the payment is for e.g. sports shirt.

Orders, along with your child's size, need to be given to Kay in the office. Payment needs to be made by Friday 7 August when we will be putting though our first order.

Swimming Lessons

The PTA are very generously paying for all children at Normanby School to receive six swimming lessons by qualified swimming instructors at the Hawera Aquatic Centre during Term Three. This costs $24 per child for the 6 lessons. We are extremely grateful to the fundraising and support we receive from both the PTA and community.

Puanga Hub (Rooms 2, 3 & 4) will have their lessons in Term 3.

Ngahere and Matariki will have their lessons in Term 4.

We will be transporting Puanga Hub children via the school vans to the Aquatic Centre. Children who forget their swimming togs and towel will remain at school.

If you are available to help out with transport or supervision, please let the class teacher or Kay know. Thank you.

Van Payments

All families who choose to use the school vans will have received invoices on the last day of school for Term Three. The bank account number has changed for van payments. Please ensure you put the money into the correct account. Full time users take precedence for the van.

We currently have a waiting list so please ensure you let Kay in the office know asap if there are any changes to your circumstances.

All van payments are made to: -

School Council and Student Leaders

Did you know that every Monday afternoon we have a student council meeting?

At these meetings the student leaders are following a set programme with the guidance of Ms Ryan. This programme teaches them the skills to be effective leaders.

At last week's assembly we announced that another student leader joined our school council. Congratulations to Indyka Hill. We have been watching her this year and have observed a growth in maturity, empathy and responsibility. Well done Indyka!!

Due to Covid19 we delayed the announcement of our Head Students for 2020. Again, we have been watching all of our student leaders closely and the senior management team announced last Friday that both Jeila Katene and Nevaeh Ratahi are our head Students for 2020. Congratulations to you both!!
