SJHS Counselor Newsletter

from the desk of Mrs. Christine Harmon

One important thing I have repeatedly seen in my over 20 years as a counselor is that "thank you" goes a long way. Numerous times, whether its a bus driver, a retreat leader, or a visitor, I am told that our students are so gracious. I hear repeated "thank you"s when we exit a bus from a field trip, and when we leave a retreat site.

This month of January 2016, I am encouraging the students to take a moment to write a "thank you" note to someone who has helped or given time to them:

a fellow student who worked with them on a project,

a teacher who stays after school or during lunch for extra help,

a coach or teacher who listened,

a friend who is there for support

a teammate for a great leadership

I have gathered a supply of blank note cards, thank you cards, and message cards that students may take, write and send/give to that individual. Please encourage your student to take advantage of "National Thank You Month" 2016.

An email was sent from "constant contact" regarding the PSAT scores and how to access them. Here is the information again in case you didn't get it:

PSAT scores are now available online for any 9-11 grade student who took the test.

You need to go to

for the student to either a. sign in if they have a college board account OR

b. sign up if they need to start one (please make sure user name and password are kept for later use)

Once they have done this a student should either see the scores or need to "ADD SCORES". If there is an ACCESS CODE needed, please email me with student last name/access code in the message and I will send it out. There is a unique one for each student.

The hard copies of results will be sent home once they are here in late January, but the online scores are interactive for the student.

Junior Class to College Fair

The Junior Class will attend the National College Fair at the convention center on Thursday, February 4, 2016 for about 1-2 hours. Information such as bus cost and permission forms will be mailed home by the end of this week.

Juniors can "register" to make it easier to maneuver the fair easier:

1. Go to where students will answer a few questions.

2. After completing registration, print barcode ID and bring it to college fair

3. Colleges can scan to access your info, saving you the time of completing cars.

SJHS Career Test

Many students and parents have inquired about a "Career Test" to help with decision making for college, etc. I have given the COPSystem in the past which identifies abilities, interests and work values. It takes about 2.5-3 hours to complete, costs $12 and is usually done on a Saturday morning.

The date for 2015-2016 is Saturday, April 23, 2016 from 9:30 am-11:30 am, so mark your calendars. I will send more information on how to "reserve" a spot in February.

March 5th SAT

Registration deadline for March 5th SAT is: FEBRUARY 5

Cost is $54.50 with essay and $43 without

These schools have March's test:

Butler, Deer Lakes, Fox Chapel, Freeport, Hampton, Kiski, Knoch, Mars, Penn Hills, Pine-Richland, Plum, Valley

Don't forget to bring me a copy of all acceptance and scholarship letters so that you can be added to "the wall" of acceptances. And, remember I need them for records I keep regarding apps, colleges and acceptances.
