Dear Henderson Families,
Happy New Year and Welcome Back! This time of year is always exciting for me as we have an opportunity to come back refreshed from winter break and ready to finish out the second half of the school year. Truly, it is a time of reflection of what we have accomplished and looking at the next steps to ensure that our students will make exponential growth. All members of our school community are responsible for the growth that our students make. So, whether you are a student, teacher, administrator, parent, community member, custodial staff, lunch staff, or other school personnel; we all have a role to play when it comes to making Henderson a wonderful learning environment for all. As we begin 2019, we all must ask ourselves what commitments will I make for the betterment of our school?
As Henderson’s leader, I am proud of our accomplishments through the first half of the 2018-19 school year. We are seeing improvements with our school’s daily attendance and tardiness, students are earning positive behavior school tickets for making great choices as well as beginning to value academics and its importance. Additionally, our staff has worked tremendously hard this school year as we have taken advantage of professional development opportunities to allow us to better support the needs of the students. Critically, we will continue our professional development efforts into the second half of the year with our eyes on results!
With the completion of 2nd quarter, we will be holding our 2nd Quarter Hawk Pride Assembly. Students will be honored for three categories: Academic Achievement, Perfect Attendance, and Hawk Pride (only awarded to two students per grade level for going above and beyond to demonstrate the Henderson School-Wide Expectations). If your child receives an award in any of the categories, we will be inviting you through sending home a letter to inform you of the award and personally call you to attend the assembly and celebrate with us your child’s accomplishments. This is a huge deal as we believe when students work hard, we need to celebrate their achievement in front of the entire school community. Celebration details are below.
Henderson Hawk Pride Grade Level Assembly (January 17th, 2019)
6th Grade Celebration: 9:34-10:19 (2nd period)
7th Grade Celebration: 10:23-11:08 (3rd period)
8th Grade Celebration: 1:20-2:05 (6th period)
Again, we welcome back our school community and will leave you with the following quote. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." ~Margaret Mead
Enjoy the New Year and the month of January!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Appiah-McNulty

Hello HMS Families,
The cold winter months are upon us! Now is the opportunity for your children to sharpen their mathematical skills while they are staying warm indoors. The state ACT Aspire Assessment will take place in April, so let’s get a head start on preparing our students to show what they know.
Henderson Middle School is working hard on pinpointing Essential Skills for all students. While learning all the standards for each course they take, our students need a laser-focused set of “essential” skills to master as part of their yearly goals. The Henderson teachers are in the developing stages of creating this list of Essential Skills for each course.
So far this year, the Math Department has created two essential skills that students have already started working on. Please go over these essential skills with your children at home and help us ensure that all Henderson students master these skills before the state testing in April. We will be sure to share more Essential Skills from the Math Department in future Monthly Newsletters. Students can use their IXL accounts to practice working on these skills along with the following free resources to help them reach mastery. Thank you for taking the time to work with your students at home on these skills.
6th Grade Math
Essential Skill #1 -- All students will be able to find equivalent fractions using common factors.
Essential Skill #2 -- All students will be able to determine the location of a point on a coordinate grid give the signs of the ordered pair and correctly plot points in all 4 quadrants of the coordinate grid.
7th/8th Grade Math
Essential Skill #1 -- All students will be able to perform the 4 basic operations using Integers without a calculator.
Essential Skill #2 -- All students will be able to solve for the variable in one-step equations with rational numbers using inverse operations.
