Long Island University Entrepreneurship Academy
This summer, Long Island University is launching the Entrepreneurship Academy, a weeklong intensive program for ambitious students planning to major in business. Admitted students engage in hands-on experiences that provide insight into career paths in business and receive leadership coaching from former executives who’ve held positions such as: Managing Director at Merrill Lynch, Marketing Director at Bloomberg, and Partner at E&Y. Students cap off their career exploration experience with a visit to a Fortune 500 company.
During the Academy, students get a taste of college life while dorming at our rural Post campus on Long Island and visiting our city campus in Brooklyn.
Students may choose from two sessions: June 23 – June 29 or July 21 – July 27.
Top candidates are passionate about business and leaders in their school communities who are eager for opportunities to advance their presentation and leadership skills while learning more about potential career paths in business.
Ideal candidates meet the following criteria:
· Professional, driven leaders in their school communities
· Current juniors planning to major in Business
· Cumulative GPA above 90, 1200 PSAT
Tuition and lodging are offered free of charge. A fee of $100 is collected for materials and students are responsible for food and transportation costs.
**If you are interested in being considered for this program, please see your counselor.
First Years
The first year learners began drawing plans for their sustainable community this week in Art/Tech and in Engineering with Mr. McCoy and Mr. Hudnall. Next week, learners will begin building a scale model of their designs. Project Sustain will culminate with final presentations the week of May 20th.
In English with Ms. Wright, learners are picking from a list of 8 different book titles to participate in a book club during class. In Physics with Mr. Hardy, cohorts have begun to learn about electricity by studying electrostatics and Coulomb’s Law. In World Geography with Mr. Welch, first years discussed renewable and non-renewable resources. Next week, they will discuss natural disasters and extreme weather.
Second Years
It’s been a busy week at Academy as the Second Years continue to gather data, create prototypes, and march forward on Project Y. Learners have been flying around the school with data sheets, 3D filament, and research documents. We look forward to see where all of this research and development takes our learners!
Learners this week dove into the world of plant biology, as they performed a flower dissection, learning and detailing the anatomy of plants. Ask your Second Year learner about the functions of the pistil and stamen! Learners have also been building knowledge around the causes of World War 1, as World History enters the Contemporary era, strong foundational knowledge of World War 1 will definitely come in handy.
Third Years
*This Enews contains special contributions made by Tristan Rolater
Third years are excited to be diving deep into their final project Going Viral! Currently, third years are designing their final presentations. In English and Engineering, learners are outlining and scripting the presentations, as well as planning and fabricating a prototype to present at the final presentations on May 20th and May 21st. Learners in Pre-calculus and Statistics are challenged to show an exponential equation found in their data gathering researching for the project. And in Digital Media, learners are going over safety regulations for fabrication and have the chance to design their own infographics detailing regulations defined by OSHA. Science and Art have paired up to teach the learners about printmaking through the process of engraving and completing a print of a virus photographed on a slide glimpsed through a microscope.
Finally, parents, mark your calendars. May 16th and May 17th bring the final dress rehearsal for the third years’ Going Viral presentations and we would love to have the learners to have the experience of presenting in front of a live audience! A link will be provided next week to RSVP for the dress rehearsals. Be ready to reserve your seat.
Fourth Years
This week the learners began playing their game “Mars Attacks.” Everyone has developed their colonial government and intergovernmental organizations. The first scenario challenged the learners to deal with a pathogen threatening luxury crop production. Below is a picture of learners participating in their own learner led United Nations Meeting. In English, this week learners analyzed the short story, “Harrison Bergeron” and wrote a reflective response comparing the goals of the Constitution that they previously drafted in Government to that of Vonnegut’s depiction of government. Colonies also spent time designing their mission patch. As they crafted their design, groups took into account their vision for their society, Charter imperatives, and their Constitution. In SRD this week, learners are practicing their capstone presentations. Don’t forget Presentations begin next Tuesday.
The website below indicates the Capstone Presentation Dates and Times. Please sign up to view your child’s final presentation.
