If you should happen to miss the call, feel free to call back at your convenience or email one of the teachers.

News!

In the fall of 2015, one young student found himself heading down the wrong path. After being kicked out of school and put on probation, he enrolled in an alternative high school in Marine City, Michigan. Through project-based learning, he began to flourish. In talking with other students, he realized there is a huge need in this area for a teen center. The vision started as Kyle's class project, and by enlisting the help of teachers, students, and community leaders, his vision is becoming a reality.

Over five years in the making, River Rec Teen Zone is now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a strong board, teen advisors, and volunteers. Each individual brings with them an incredible background in youth enrichment, as well as being proven leaders that understand the importance of community and youth nurturance.

With the support of our community, River Rec Teen Zone is continuing to offer after-school enrichment opportunities with an official re-opening scheduled for later this fall. In the meantime, RRTZ is hosting a spooktacular haunted house every Friday and Saturday evening during the month of October with proceeds benefiting future River Rec programs and projects.

In addition, with the support of the Community Foundation of St. Clair County's Blue Water Arts Committee, St. Clair Art Association, Diversity Initiative of St. Clair County, and a grant from Generator-Z, RRTZ will be hosting a series of artist mentor opportunities that will partner area youth with professional artists and musicians. Students will have the opportunity to hear the artists' stories, share in live performances, demonstrations, and ultimately work collectively on a series of public art projects. Follow River Rec Teen Zone for news and updates on future opportunities.

Artist Mentor Series

Plan For Teen Zone Mentorship with New Century Art Gallery Over 8-12 months 1-3 students will meet once a month for around an hour with Jeanne Burris Johnson, Gallerist of New Century Art Gallery to plan an exhibit while learning about the business of art. At the end of the program, students will have a basic understanding of the art business and participate in an exhibition they can add to their professional resume. The goal of this program is to provide teens interested in pursuing art with the knowledge and skills to succeed in the art world beyond the making of art. During this program students will: • Prepare a plan for what kind of exhibition they would like to have and create the works to be shown in the gallery. • Every month learn a new aspect of the business of art such as: …How to plan your time so that you get your exhibition put together on time. …How to price artwork. …Why finish work can make the difference between making a sale and clients walking away. …How to approach an art gallery that you want to show your art in. …The importance of promoting your work. … Putting together an artist biography and statement. …Best practices for keeping inventory and bookkeeping. …How to find “Calls for Art” and enter them. …and much more • Participate in our Master Classes and Artist Talks at no cost.

Masks on Buses

The CDC has required all public transportation to wear masks. This does include school buses. That being said, we are asking for your help with reminding your student(s) before they leave in the morning to be sure they have their mask on before going to their bus. We will not have masks on the buses to provide for students. Teachers will be reminding students at the end of the day to mask up before getting on the bus as well. If a student does not have a mask on, the bus drivers will be sending them back into the school to get one. We are on a tight schedule and will not be able to wait for students to run back into school to get one.

The Emergency Broadband Benefit Program is a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) program that provides a temporary discount on monthly broadband internet bills for qualifying low-income households. If your household is eligible, you can receive:

· Up to a $50/month discount on your broadband service and associated equipment rentals

· A one-time discount of up to $100 for a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer (with a co-payment of more than $10 but less than $50)

Only one monthly service discount and one device discount is allowed per household.

The FCC has announced that consumers can begin applying for and enrolling in the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program on May 12, 2021. The program will end when the fund runs out of money, or six months after the Department of Health and Human Services declares an end to the COVID-19 health emergency, whichever is sooner.
