Child labor in the West Africa (TA
We can stop child labor in the Cocoa Industry in West Africa
Why are children being enslaved in the cocoa industry in West Africa?
Part of the reason why children are being enslaved is because they are in need of work. The reason they need work is because their families need money. A lot of families in West Africa are poor. Families often send their children to work in the cocoa fields, they are unaware of how dangerous that work is. Another reason the children are being enslaved is because the traffickers tell them the job pays well. Although the job does not pay well, it still gives the family some money. The farmers use child labor because the children can’t demand higher wages. If they could, then the farmers wouldn't get much money because the price for cocoa is so low. The price is so low because so much is grown for export. The reason the problem is so big in West Africa is because cocoa is grown on 2 million farms in West Africa. Also, 70% of the world's cocoa is grown in West Africa.
What it is like to be a slave
The experience of an enslaved child.
First, the children have have long work days. They work from six in the morning to late afternoon. Although they work so long and hard they are still being paid a below poverty wage. Also the work is really dangerous and tiring. It is dangerous because the children are manning machetes and chainsaws. Also the children are not being educated. That is happening because they are working long days and do not have enough time to be educated and also there is nobody to educate them. (RUN-ON)
