Why is exercise important during the COVID-19 pandemic?
Regular exercise is essential for everyone under normal circumstances. However, here are a few reasons why exercise is especially crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic:
Exercise boosts the immune system: Research shows that regular, moderate-intensity exercise has immune-boosting benefits that may help your body fight off infections, including COVID-19.
Exercise may prevent weight gain: Exercise can help you burn extra calories caused by dietary changes and offset the effects of sedentary activities.
Exercise reduces stress and anxiety: Exercise is a proven mood-booster and can help adults reduce stress levels and build emotional resilience.
Exercise improves sleep: There is evidence that suggests regular exercise helps you fall asleep faster and improves sleep quality — and getting a good night’s sleep has also been found to boost your immune system.
Exercise may be especially beneficial for older adults and people with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, arthritis, or heart disease. Regular exercise can help to improve balance, flexibility, strength, mobility, and cardiovascular health. Plus, it can boost energy and overall well-being.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
"Snow Day" - Honors 8
Snowman - Fundamentals 8
For our Virtual Day, Fundamentals 8 French completed a similar activity, but since we are learning about Winter clothing, the students learned how to draw their own snowman and then dressed it with winter clothing, and wrote a paragraph telling a little bit about their snowman and what he wore outside. We then placed all of our drawings and writings on one Class Google Slide presentation. It was a great day!
coding 1
Students in Coding 1 are gaining familiarity with the Scratch interface by animating the letters of their names. Students add sprites, backdrops and code. In this activity, students learn two important concepts: sequence and events. Students learn that scripts are processed in order from top to bottom, and there are several ways to cause an action to happen(event). Students see that Computer Science can be creative and expressive. Below are snips from two student projects. Cindy (Green Team) and Carmella (Silver Team).
Elbert Frank Cox
This week in Miss Merryman's 7th Grade math classes the students learned about Elbert Frank Cox. Elbert Frank Cox was the first African American to receive his PhD in Mathematics in the entire world.
"Elbert Frank Cox was born in Evansville, Indiana, in December 1895. He earned the baccalaureate degree from the University of Indiana in 1917 with a major in mathematics. After serving in the US Army in France during World War I, he returned to pursue a career in teaching. Before enrolling in the graduate mathematics program at Cornell University in September 1922, he taught mathematics in the public schools in Henderson, Kentucky and later at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1925 he was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree in mathematics from Cornell and thus, he is the first known Black to receive the Ph.D. in Mathematics in the United States; in fact, in the world."
