Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15 to October 15 marks the one month celebration of Hispanic Heritage. This month honors and recognizes the contributions and influences of Hispanic Americans. Hispanic Americans have had many influences in American society and culture.
The spotlight for this week is one of today's most influential Hispanic Americans: Sonia Maria Sotomayor.
Sonia Maria Sotomayor is the first justice of the Supreme Court to be of Hispanic descent. She was born in New York City in 1954, and her parents were both from Puerto Rico. Sotomayor attended Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx, where she was on the forensics team, involved in student government, and eventually graduated valedictorian in 1972.
Sotomayor then went onto attend Princeton University, receiving a full scholarship, graduating summa cum laude in 1976. She then attended law school at Yale and received her Juris Doctor (Law) degree in 1979. During her time there she was editor at the Yale Law Journal and earned a summer associates position with a prominent New York law firm. Following her graduation and admittance into the New York Bar Association, she worked as an assistant district attorney in New York for over four years before entering the private sector in 1984.
Sotomayor was nominated for a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York by President George H. W. Bush on November 27, 1991, and on August 11 of the following year, Sotomayor was confirmed by unanimous consent of the full United States Senate. Sotomayor became the youngest judge in the Southern District, the first Hispanic federal judge in New York State, and the first Puerto Rican woman to serve as a judge in a U.S. federal court.
Sotomayor was nominated to the Supreme Court in May of 2009 by President Barack Obama. During her time on the Supreme Court, she has often expressed concern for the rights of defendants, made calls for reform of the criminal justice system, and issued impassioned dissents on issues of race, gender and ethnic identity.

Start with Hello
Manavon Elementary School is one amazing school community and we are going to show our extraordinary compassion with a START WITH HELLO week, the week of September 19-23. Start With Hello originated in Sandy Hook with a promise that if I see someone that seems alone, I will notice, and I will do something, by starting with hello!
Loneliness is the overwhelming feeling of being left out and social isolation is not having frequent interactions with friends. Young people who feel this way may pull away from society, and struggle with learning and social development. Due to COVID-19, all students can empathize with the feelings of isolation due to physical and social distancing. Start With Hello is an important social and emotional learning program to reintroduce students to the power of connecting and helping one another. Start With Hello also pairs well with our message #PASDyoubelonghere
Our Start With Hello week will have a daily dress theme along with a challenge for each day. Please see the details below.

In order to ensure delivery of these notifications, please confirm that your email address is on file with the school district and add school@peachjar.com to your email contacts. We look forward to providing families with important updates through this new communication tool!
Remind App
We will be using Remind again this year!
Beginning the week of September 5, all communication will go through Remind only. Download the app today!
You have an important role in communicating with your child's teacher. Remember that during the school day, teachers are working with students and are directed to limit their communication so that they can teach. If your child's teacher does not respond immediately, trust that they will respond within 24 hours.
In addition, our teachers have families too! Evenings are spent much like yours, and I have asked the teachers to take this time with their families and catch up on communication the next day.
Updating Your Contact Information
If you have not already done so, PLEASE go into your skyward account and complete the annual student update. The update is required annually for each child in your family that attends a PASD school in any capacity. This process confirms/updates emergency contact info, health history and authorizations for your child. If you need to update your address in skyward, please contact Nancy Marsh.
Check it off your "to do" list today!
