TJH Update #31
March 31, 2021
No School on Friday, April 2nd & Monday, April 5th
A Message from Dr. Mitzner
Regards,
Dr. Kris Mitzner
Principal
Tays Junior High
Dear Parents,
On April 6 (Tuesday) we will be a closed campus for STAAR testing.
6th graders will have a regular school day (with a modified lunch schedule).
7th graders will take the Writing STAAR assessment.
8th graders will be asynchronous learners from home.
We have included frequently asked questions below to help you with the testing process this year. (Please keep in mind that this is our first test administration using this new format, so some of our processes could change for STAAR testing in May.)
FAQs
My 7th grade student is KVA, how will they take the STAAR test?
Students will participate in STAAR testing by coming to Tays Jr. High. If your student does not participate in STAAR testing their answer document will be submitted which will reflect this decision.
What does it mean that my 8th grader will be asynchronous?
Teachers will post work for students to complete at home. Students will not be expected to Zoom with their teachers, but they must submit the assigned work before 11:59 PM to be considered “present” for the class that day.
What time should my 6th/7th grade child arrive at campus?
Students should be dropped off in the car rider line or ride/walk to school between 8:30 and 8:50 am. If you qualify for bus services, your student may ride the bus to and from school.
What does my 7th grade student need to bring for testing?
Your student will only need pencils and a book to read after the test. Students may bring a bottle of water to drink during testing. Safety protocols mandate that students must wear a mask at all times while on campus.
Will my child be offered breakfast and/or lunch while on campus?
Yes. Students may bring their lunch or purchase a lunch from the cafeteria during their designated lunchtime.
Can my 7th grade student leave after testing?
During the instructional day, students must be picked up and checked out by a parent to leave campus whether they are a virtual or in-person learner. If you plan on checking your child out of school after testing, please click HERE.
Where will my 7th grade KVA student go after testing if they are not checked out by a parent?
Students will be placed in a large room setting after the assessment. If your student plans on staying until the end of the day, they may bring a device to access their classwork on Canvas. It is recommended that students bring work or a book to keep themselves busy.
Will my child be marked absent if they do not take the STAAR test on campus?
Yes. TEA requires public school districts to mark a student absent if they are not present to participate in a state assessment. However, should you choose to not send your in-person or virtual student to school to take a state assessment, there are no academic consequences and no expectation for students to engage in virtual instruction for being absent on an assessment day.
Will there be testing make-ups?
Yes. Any student that is not present to test on Tuesday, April 6th, will make up the Writing STAAR test on Thursday, April 8th if they are on campus.

Katy ISD COVID-19 Mitigation Plan Update Phase 2 Protocol Clarifications (Effective March 29, 2021) Outside Food or Gift Deliveries to campus
Elementary and secondary campuses will communicate their Pre-COVID campus specific procedure(s) for instructional day delivery of outside food and personal items for students. This will vary by campus and parents are asked to refer to their student’s campus communication for clarification regarding drop-off of student food or personal items. Phase 1 and Phase 2 safety protocols remain in effect and will still require adherence.
TJH Guidelines:
DELIVERIES
Allowed deliveries: homework, school projects, school supplies, athletic gear or uniforms, band/orchestra instruments, textbooks, glasses, keys, up to $25 cash, and other items related to school instruction or activities.
Not Allowed: letters or notes, flowers, balloons, gifts, sealed packages, food or beverages (see note 1 and 2), medication (see note #1), and cash greater than $25 (see note 3).
Notes:
Parents or guardians are allowed to deliver food, beverages, or medication for only their student(s). Any food deliveries must be coordinated by the student and the parent or guardian delivering the food. The front office will not handle food.
Commerial food deliveries and commercial food delivery services such as Door Dash will not be allowed.
Cash in amounts greater than $25 will be accepted, but must go directly to the teacher/coach/program director rather than the student.
