In Case You Missed It:
Thank you to everyone for remaining calm and flexible on Friday morning during the soft lock down. Safety is always our number one priority at SanLee. Please let a member of the Admin Team know if you have any feedback on how to improve in the future. I know it is difficult when we do not have an intercom system. Windstream has ordered and is waiting on another part which they hope will correct the issue.
Please make sure you are discussing how you are utilizing before, during, and after reading strategies and vocabulary development in grade level and department PLC's each time you meet. It is also important to share what you are doing to meet the writing requirements and scheduling time look at samples you collected. This month's focused PD for administrators and Literacy Leaders is on direct and explicit instruction. It is important to remember that we are teachers and are not assigners. You must spend time showing and demonstrating "how to" using (modeling) multiple strategies instead of telling to do a worksheet or assignment.
We finished up our second AVID Professional Learning Workshop this week. Teachers that participated have a better understanding of the process for doing Cornell Notes, connecting vocabulary to a bigger picture, and an active reading strategy for their content area. The next APLW will be offered on our workday, November 8. More information and a sign up will come out soon.
Everyone must complete the Health Care Open Enrollment online with Blue Cross and Blue Shield, fill out the verification form, and return to Gaye Capps by Tuesday, October 25.
Thank you to everyone for helping the front office with triage in your classroom while we are looking for a new school nurse. Interviews begin on Monday.
Libby Washington will be joining the EC team as a teacher's assistant for Melissa Paschal and Rena Szakaly soon. Libby has experience in child care and the hotel industry. I will let you know when her official start date will be.
Vincent Pienaar, Nejla deLambert, Kevin Degon, Ashley Inman, and I will be leaving Tuesday morning at 6:15 am to visit Trexler Middle School in Richlands, NC. They have been an AVID National Demonstration School since 2011. I appreciate these teacher leaders for taking time to visit Trexler so we can reflect and plan to improve our current practices on our journey to become an ANDS. We will share when we get back!
All classroom temperatures were adjusted that reported in the "Too hot/too cold" form. If you are still having problems, please email Joy, so we can ask maintenance to take a closer look.
Many of the orders placed are arriving. Gaye will be delivering boxes to grade level chairs for distribution.
We called about the Master Lock order this week for the broken lockers. They should be here any day. We will let you know when all the broken lockers are fixed.
Congratulations to Jamie Cox for winning the $1000 PTSO raffle and Andrew Allen for winning $100 for having the student that sold the winning ticket in his homeroom! In Stallion Style Jamie shared her winnings with us all by purchasing breakfast biscuits for us on Thursday.
Teamwork makes the dream work! ~John Maxwell
