Why did the Chinese imigrate to America?
The gold rush in California and the Opium War.
What is the Opium War?
The first Opium war was China vs. Britain. There then was a second Opium War, Anglo French war in China, which was Britain and France against China.
Discrimination (the hardships)
White Americans would hack off the long queues (kyus), or another word for braids, worn by Chinese men. They burned the shacks of Chinese miners, beatings followed burnings. 1885, 150 white miners in Rock Springs, Wyoming brutally attack their Chinese coworkers, killing 28 and wounding 15 and driving several out of town. Although the Chinese experienced many negative actions and prejudices, many Chinese committed to staying in the United States.
1852 Foreign Miner Tax Law
American miners called on the government to drive foreigners out of the goldfields. There was soon a law created, the 1852 Foreign Miner Tax Law. The law stated that foreign miners had to pay a monthly fee for a license to mine. Tax collectors came to California and many Chinese fled.
Affects on today's society?
When the Chinese first came to America they brought their cultures along with such as the arts, tastes, scents, and sounds of one of the world's oldest and richest cultures. Things such as Chinese restaurants are examples of how the Chinese culture is used today.
Why Americans disliked Chinese?
As more and more Chinese came to America there was beginning to be less jobs for Americans.
