The Falls are estimated to be 5,000 ft. wide and 354 ft. high, making them not the tallest, nor the widest, but the largest. Yet, they are about two times the height of Niagara Falls. The local tribes used to call it, Mosi-o-Tunya, meaning, "The smoke that thunders" because the noise from the falling curtain can be heard from a distance of 40 kilometers. 19 million cubic feet of water pass over them, each minute. Their spray can be visible from 30 miles away. In fact, The Zambezi River Rain Forest is the only place to receive rain 24 hours a day, 7 days a week because of the spray between November and April, which are the rainy months.

Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Wonders of the world. With the Zambezi River, the falls create the biggest curtain of falling water. When a European explorer named, David Livingstone, discovered the falls in 1855, he named them after Queen Victoria, the reigning queen in England at the time. The falls are also beautiful. In fact, when the sun sets and the full moon comes out at night, the moonlight bounces off the spray of the falls, creating a moonbow;a rainbow at night. Lastly, Victoria Falls is the largest fall in the world.

In particular, the environment around the falls is having some trouble. The Falls on the Zimbabwe side, within the National Park is so well protected and monitored. On the subject of this, the Zambian side of the falls is where many of the locals go down to the river to wash their clothes, leaving rubbish around. When fishermen come around, they leave about 100 tons of human waste around Victoria Falls. Many commercial sightseeing helicopters have caused an effect on the birdlife. With that, there have been studies of a disturbance on the animals with the noise of the helicopters. As a result of this, the environment near the falls is not so good, for plant and animal life.
