We have the Right Mental Attitude
News from the 5th Grade
5th graders have been learning about our number system. They have learned that to go from one place value is 10 times larger than the place value before it. They have learned that our number system is called base 10. They have learned how dividing by 10 creates decimal numbers. They will be learning how to round decimal numbers. They will be using place value to multiply numbers, including decimal numbers. They will be learning about the metric system which was created from the base 10 number system.
ELA
The fifth graders have been working hard. We are learning how to go back into the text to look for clues from the author about what a character is like. We have also discovered that character traits are on the inside of a character and are not directly stated by the author. We have to make inferences from the clues the author gives us. We are in the process of making the main characters from our class novel, "Because of Mr. Terupt". The students would love for you to stop by and see their character sketches (See pictures below).
Science
Students just completed an entire unit on ecosystems, where they learned about food webs, food chains, the differences between consumers and producers, and the many roles (e.g. niches) that organisms play in the environment around them. Students were able to predict and analyze potential outcomes for ecosystems being disrupted, the introduction of a new species, or the removal of a current species in ecosystems. Students will now turn their attention to light and learn about reflection, refraction, and the transmission of light. They will also learn about the color spectrum and why we see the colors that we do.
Social Studies
Students have created timelines, located cities using latitude and longitude, learned about the 7 continents and oceans on planet Earth. Students will turn their attention to the Mayan civilization, where they will learn about how they practiced their religion, what they were able to grow and eat, how they governed themselves, and what students around their ages, learned either at school and/or in their homes. After the completion of the Mayans, students will also learn about the Aztecs and Incan civilizations.
Art
5th graders are finishing their first project, Op Art, or Optical Illusion Art. Students learned that Op Art does three things: 1) it looks like it's moving, 2) it appears 3-D, and 3) it tricks your brain into seeing something that may not exist. We looked at paintings by Op Artists Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely and described the many optical illusion tricks that were happening. Students chose from several different Op Art designs to create their drawings before adding color using marker. Fifth graders used Complementary Colors (or colors that sit opposite on the color wheel) to create contrast, or how complementary colors compete in brightness when placed next to each other. Below are a few student artworks on display.
Computers
Students are learning some keyboard shortcuts as they type and edit text in a program called Print Shop. Students are learning about touch typing, a method of typing without looking at the keys. They will be creating several projects in Google Apps next month.
Students may view daily homework assignments by visiting the South Central Middle School homework website. (http://southcentraltrojans.weebly.com)
Mohican Information
Students are preparing to attend outdoor school later this month. They have been discussing what to wear for various weather conditions. They are being introduced to the different procedures at outdoor school, so they will be more comfortable once there since they will know what to expect. Please, remember to have boots for your child to wear at outdoor school.
