PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Tēnā koutou
A big thank you to those who supported our Whacky Wheels Day for Hawkes Bay. We are still counting the proceeds but will let you know how much you raised when we can. We are very grateful for the kind and generous support the community has provided.
New Entrant Open Night
Always wondered what the new entrant space looks like? Have a neighbour, friend or family member who has preschoolers? Come to school tomorrow night between 4.30 and 6.30pm to check our cool new space out. You will be able to have a chat with the staff and see the exciting things happening in our space.
We are able to take a limited number of out of school enrolments for year 0 - 2.
Please email lwhettingsteel@goldensands.school.nz if you would like to attend. See you all there!

Save the Date! Thursday 23 March @ 7.30pm
We are incredibly lucky to have amazing whanau that are willing to give back to the parent community.
Dr. Paul Meens, Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist , has been working in mental health since 2006. Since 2018, he is one of the psychiatrists at CAMHS at Te Whatu Ora - Health NZ. After his training and work experience in the Netherlands, he enjoys spending his family and work life in the Bay of Plenty.
In Neurodiversity: What is it? , Paul will give an introduction into the diagnoses and background of ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD), while also discussing current talking points around Autism, ADHD and Gender Diversity. He will also attempt to give insight into available treatment options and the impact of neurodiversity and different life domains, such as school and family life.
This is free to attend, we would love to see you there.

We need your help!
We have a number of jobs that our caretaker Tony, needs a hand with. If you can lend us a hand on Saturday 18 March, we would love to hear from you. Bring a mate and we might finish off at PapaMo’s.
Please let us know if you can make it by RSVPing to admin@goldensands.school.nz
Thursday 16 March - Strike Day
School will be closed on Thursday as the nationwide teachers strike takes place. Teachers are striking after negotiations broke down in the last few weeks. We want to provide a better learning environment for our tamariki and a better working environment for teachers across the primary sector. We know that you support us and we appreciate you for doing so. Thank you!
Positive Behaviour 4 Learning (PB4L)
This week's focus continues to be: Brain break behaviour
Our key ideas are as follows:
We are sun smart, and always wear a hat outside in T1 and T4
We know to play in the right place at the right time during BB
We return to class promptly
We seek help from duty teachers, when needed
We wait for our turn, patiently
We share equipment, and return it to the right place when we are finished
We keep our hands and feet to ourselves
We use polite words
Thank you for reinforcing these ideas at home too.

Blake Poetry
Blake Poetry
The Blake team have been writing poems about celestial objects. The students were introduced to personification and similes. Here is Ella Riley’s poem for you to enjoy.
Meteorite
The meteorite shoots through the sky with no restraint,
Like a person zooming around space
listening to the commands of his leader.
An astronaut floating around in space,
It shoots through the sky in flames like it is crying.

Travel Smart News
This year we have a new amazing Travel Smart team which includes Chloe Berkett, Summer Jackson, Miela Murphy, Beth Metcalfe, Liesl Van Waveren, Izzy Reynolds, Florence Helps,
Jesse Hogarth, Caitlyn Taylor, Erin Mckean, Grace Pepper, Jessica Hall, Kennedy Edwards, Maria Toesoliga and Betty Kofe.
We try hard to encourage students at GSS to Walk, Scooter, Bike, Skate, carpool and bus to school. We also promote road safety to the students.
We will still be doing the Wednesday Challenge this year and will be going around to the students' classrooms every Wednesday and collecting data from both coming to school and going home. The class who gets the highest percentage for any way that excludes going in the car wins the golden foot.
We hope this encourages students to Walk, Scooter, Bike, Skate, Carpool or bus to school.
Week 6 Winners for the most using active travel are:
Mahy 2 and 3 tied with 70%
Blake 3 had 83%
Rutherford 3 had 72%
Hillary 2 had 89%
Congratulations to those classes!
Yours sincerely,
The Travel Smart Team
