A Message From Our Principal

Dear Springfield Elementary School Families,

Winter is definitely here! I hope that everyone enjoyed the snow days we had a couple of weeks ago. I know the students had many exciting stories to share with their adventures in the snow! Please mark your calendars that Monday, February 19, and Friday, March 30, are now school make-up days. These were previously student holidays. We still have a few weeks of winter left. Please make sure your child has on warm clothes on really cold days. Students do go outside for recess unless the “Feels Like” temperature is 32 degrees or below.

Our school campus has received a few improvements over the past few weeks. Over the holiday break, we had a new dividing wall installed between the gym and cafeteria. The wall has added great improvement in blocking noise between the two areas and looks great. Our cafeteria also had a new projection system installed. This will provide our campus with additional options when we host guest speakers or have assemblies.

With some of the funds from our PTA Boosterthon Fundraiser, we have added additional playground equipment to our kindergarten playground. Additional picnic tables for our front field space have also arrived! These will be a great help during our family events. Our teachers have also been using their Boosterthon allocations for instructional resources for their classrooms. We are grateful for your parent support that has helped provide these new resources for SES!

Springfield Elementary will be hosting its first “Family STEAM Night” on Tuesday, February 27. Be on the lookout for more details in the coming days. Please reserve this date on your calendar!

Please let me know if you have any question, or if I can ever be of assistance. I am happy to help! Thank you for your continued support for your child’s education and Springfield Elementary School!

Counselor's Corner

This month in classroom guidance we are focusing on friendship and bullying. In Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade, we are discussing ways to be a good friend and things that we say or do to help or hurt friendships. In 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, we are discussing the definition of bullying, how to be an "upstander" instead of a bystander, and what to do if you are a target. As a school, we are working on standing up, standing strong, and standing together so we can stomp out bullying.

Notes from the Nurse

Flu season is among us. Please encourage good hand hygiene with your student. Remember, students must be fever free without aid of medication for 24 hours to return to school. The student must also be free from vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school. Thank you for your help during this peak of flu season!

Mrs. Cageao's Technology Class Meets Rosie

Rosie, a NAO robot, has been at our school for a few weeks. The fourth and fifth graders learned some basic programming to make her speak and move in a square. They discovered that she does not walk on carpet but if we flipped the carpet she could move on the hard- mostly smooth side. Check out this video to see what the student's in Ms. Shamblin's class learned to do in Technology!

Where has the year gone? We finished a Robotics lesson with 4th and 5th grade. See the video on the website for our success. 5th graders will be doing a Breakout about coding in February and 4th will be making videos in Brainpop. 3rd is finishing a Breakout and doing a great job working in groups. They will be starting research the second week in February. 2nd is working on a Google Slide to show what they know about the Google Drive and about Digital Safety. First Grade and Kindergarten and working on keyboarding skills.

In PE, 1st-3rd graders are learning proper technique for bowling. 3rd graders are learning the 3 step approach, while 1st-2nd graders are learning the one step approach. Check the groupon website and take your students to strikers so they can show off what they have learned in PE! Starting in February, 4th graders will begin an inquiry based learning project to develop their own personal fitness plan. These students will do some research on what type of exercises are right for their age, and put it into a plan so they can grow and develop healthy bodies for a lifetime! After they have created their PFP, they will be able to put it into place during our warm ups in PE. I would love for you to encourage them to do it at home as well! Perhaps, you can work with your student on developing YOUR personal fitness plan and workout at home together!!

Our 3rd graders will be singing at Fort Mill High School on Sat. Feb 24th @12:30pm.

This day includes a chili cook off and a silent auction to benefit the Foundation for Fort Mill Schools.

Come out and taste some chili and listen to the kids!
