JLMS Principal Newsletter

Start of the 2020-21 School Year (Edition 2)

First Day - September 1

Our first day of school on September 1 will be a 1/2 day for in-person 6th grade students in the morning. There will still be busing and 6th grade students will attend from 7:29-11:00 a.m. on September 1. This allows us to still have only 6th grade students in the building and get them welcomed and acclimated to JLMS.

We will also invite our new in-person 7th and 8th grade students to join us from 8:30-10:00 a.m. to learn about JLMS, begin making relationships with adults in our building, and get introduced to Canvas, our online learning platform. We ask that parents arrange transportation in order for their student to attend during that time.

In the afternoon, we will have all virtual students meet with their teachers to begin the relationship building process, learn their daily schedules, and learning expectations. We will be sending out further communication to virtual families separately with google meet links for this day. Below is what the virtual students schedule will look like on September 1.

Locker Setup Day

Locker assignments and combinations are viewable when you login to Skyward under the student information tab. On Friday, August 28, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. students and a parent can come to JLMS to setup their locker. Students and parents will need to wear a face covering during this process and we ask that you exit the building immediately upon the completion of your locker setup. We only assigned lockers to in-person students that requested to have a locker as part of the school registration process.

Virtual Students Chromebook Pickup & Other Materials

All students that have selected to learn virtually from home, your Chromebook is ready to be picked up at the district office this week during office hours. The district office is located at 1900 Washington St. and the office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All students will need their Chromebook for September 1, so it is wise to get it before hand and test with your home network.

In addition, we are working with our staff this week to identify any materials that would need to be picked up at JLMS for our virtual students.

COVID-19 Health Screening Checklist

You have heard many times that the district is implementing guidelines to Stay Safe to Stay Open. In order to do this, we need families to assess their student(s) everyday before sending them to school. We are using the guidance of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the Washington Ozaukee Public Health Department to identify symptoms that would lead to a student being assigned to virtual learning. Please be aware that if your child has a specific symptom or combination of symptoms, that is assumed they have a probable positive case of COVID-19. Your student would then be assigned to virtual learning. The student would be able to return to school once they have a negative COVID-19 test and our symptom free. If the student does not get a COVID-19 test, then the student can return to school after 10 days of symptom(s) onset and 24 hours fever free without use of medication and improved symptoms. If your student begins to display symptoms at school, we will contact families and the student will need to be picked up immediately. It is crucial that all your personal contact information and emergency contact information is current in Skyward. We will work with closely with families when student illness occurs. Below is a link to the checklist that you can use as part of your morning routines before sending your student(s) to school.

COVID-19 Health Screening Checklist for Children

Below I have also linked the parent Q&A presentation that was used in early August. If you go to slide 17, it will provide time frames that students would be assigned to virtual learning if they have a positive COVID-19 test or are in close contact with an individual that has tested positive.

Student Drop-off and Pickup Procedure

Please refer to the linked letter below for our student drop-off and pickup procedures. In the document you will find a visual off the process. If you drop-off your student, we ask that drop-off begin at 7:15 a.m. because students are reporting directly to their first hour class this school year.

JLMS Lunch and Recess

We have finalized the JLMS lunch and recess process. We will be using both our cafeteria and small gym to space students out while they eat lunch. We will work with students to identify and create their lunchtime seating assignments. Students will remain masked until they are at their assigned eating location. Anytime a student needs to move during lunch, they will mask up as they move. When students are outside for recess, they do not have to wear a mask unless they are participating in close contact game. Examples of a close contact game would be 3 on 3 basketball or Gaga Ball. Students will sanitize hands before and after recess time. Additionally, recess equipment will be cleaned between uses. Please note that when the weather is appropriate, we will eat outside in a picnic style fashion.

Moving to Semester Grading Period

This year the elementary schools have moved to semester grading and GHS has traditionally been on semester grading. In order to align our practices as a 4K-12 system, John Long will be moving to semester grading periods this year. The quarter mark will be used a checkpoint of student learning progress for families. Please read the linked letter for more information on moving to a semester grading format at JLMS.
