What is going on?
We had a great day playing in Global Day of Play! We had the perfect weather for it too.
Thank you very much for all the supplies sent in. It really does make the kids more motivated to learn! We still need a few more items. We are running drastically low on glue sticks and pencils as well.
Classroom Needs:
toothpicks
glue sticks
pencils
Reading: We will conclude our poetry unit. Students will learn how Jack Prelutsky, poet, gets his inspiration & follow his writing tips to create original poems.
Writing: This week, we will continue learning about different types of poems and create a few of our own.
Spelling: Say, let, live, night, until, use, want, third
Grammar: Students will continue learning about the importance of using adjectives, especially in poetry.
Science: We will compare the ways living organisms depend on each other and on their environments such as through food chains. We will explore how the food chain works in different ecosystems.
Math: We will start our unit on Geometry. Children will sort and name 2-D and 3-D shapes. Kids will classify and sort polygons including sides and vertices.

Valentine Box or Bag!!
Start working on your Valentine’s Day box. This is due in class no later than Thursday February 13th. Bag/Box large enough to hold all cards & candy (think adult shoe box size or larger) Another idea is a large gift bag! No decorating! :)
name is clearly displayed for all to see
hole/opening is large enough for items to be dropped inside
there is a way to get into the box to read cards.
Our party will be held on Friday, Feb. 14th. It will be low-key and classmates only. (No parents this time around!) I do ask that everyone wear red, white, pink or other valentine colors just because it looks awesome in the pics. .

Are you interested in sharing your coding or STEAM skills with kids at a half-day school-wide event at Patsy Sommer Elementary in Austin, TX? Let’s get some kids excited about computer science and work to close the digital divide in Texas.
We are super excited to invite you to participate in Sommer Elementary Schools first ever Youth Code Jam which will take place on Saturday, March 7th from 1-4pm. A Community Code Jam is a hands-on workshop bringing together students, parents and volunteer programmers to learn and grow with code.
Our campus is located in north Austin in Round Rock ISD. We are comprised of about 1260 students in grades Kinder through fifth grade. We are expecting 400+ people to be in attendance. WE NEED YOU!
In order to make this event a success we need a minimum of 50 volunteers to lead 25 stations. Our hope is that you will sign up and bring a team (2 or more) with you to lead one station. Our primary goal is to expose our students to coding. However, we are excited to offer other STEAM focused stations.
Don’t have a station idea? That's ok! We can provide an activity for you. Have your own idea of what you want to do? Great! We love that too.
