Jarret J Krosoczka - Banned Book Week Chat - Recording Link
If you happened to miss our #BannedBooksWeek event with Jarrett J. Krosoczka on Tuesday, we’ve got some good news. His talk will be available to watch for the next 30 days! And you do not want to miss this.
He talks about his 2018 book "Hey, Kiddo: How I Lost My Mother, Found My Father, and Dealt with Family Addiction," which has been "challenged" for its language and content but has also been praised as a book that helps youngsters cope with the challenges of life.
The author also shared many details of his journey to becoming an award-winning author and illustrator, as well as giving us a sneak peek at his upcoming book "Sunshine," which is a follow-up to "Hey, Kiddo" (and which we're now all super excited for!). He also answers our questions WHILE SKETCHING (it’s mesmerizing. I had to watch it once for the sketches, and a second time for the Q and A).

Breakout Loctober
If you have students who love Breakout games and puzzles, or if you’re looking for quick, fun activities for your classes, Locktober might be just what you need this month! Every day in October, Breakout EDU will be releasing a new Fall-themed digital lock for your students to solve. Try out today’s challenge here: https://platform.breakoutedu.com/game/play/lock-of-the-day-october-4-2021-127522-HA8PKBPUP5
These are designed to take about 5 minutes, depending on your students’ age and skill level. Based on the first lock, I would say they will be aimed at upper elementary and older. Digital games can be shared with a simple link- post it anywhere students can access and they can play without signing in. A perfect length for a bell-ringer, extra credit, or as an option for students who finish other activities early.
If your students are the super creative types, Breakout is also running a design contest this month. Students can submit their own games, puzzles, artwork, and signs. More info here: https://resources.breakoutedu.com/locktober
While you’re on the Breakout page, don’t forget about the hundreds of full games on the Breakout platform. You’ll find curriculum-aligned games as well as the “just for fun” variety. Every game can provide the opportunity to flex those critical thinking muscles and any game can be customized to add/subtract locks and other game elements. Worried about lots of students touching the locks and boxes at once? Digital games are an easy and safe alternative to physical games, allowing you to have fun and maintain distancing at the same time
