Ocean Energy
The ocean can produce three types of energy: thermal energy from the sun's heat, mechanical energy from the tides and waves, and tidal energy using the movement of tidal waves to create energy.
Sources of Energy
Process of Tidal Energy
A dam is built on a tidal river. When the tide rises, water moves from the dam to the bay. When the tide falls, water leaves the bay. This constant movement of water spins turbines which in turn generates electricity.
Process of OTEC
Substances are boiled in water, such as ammonia. Gases evaporate and spin a turbine similar to a steam engine.
Advantages
Oceanic energy is a renewable energy source. It is very environmentally sound. Water is extremely abundant and available in almost every place you could imagine. Plus, there's a variety of ways to capture oceanic energy
Disadvantages
Although oceanic energy is very efficient, only power plants located close to the water will reap the benefits. There is also a negative effect on marine life and commercial vessels.
