Week of August 14, 2017
Classes of Mrs. Blankenship & Mrs. Rungruang
What a great week we shared!
Curriculum Update
All core subjects will be DA (District Assessment) tested for baseline data next week. There is not a series of tests that require studying. We will use this information to formulate groups and differentiate instruction as needed for our students.
Mrs. Blankenship's subjects:
Reading-The students will continue to settle in to the fifth grade Reader's Workshop. The purpose for being an avid and engaged reader as well as setting personal reading goals will be a focus. Please note that a standing 20 minute reading homework assignment is the expectation in my class. Reading may include chapter books, informational texts, current events, and reading materials that meet your approval as a parent. The goal is to read! The format may vary based upon your child's interest and reading level.
Social Studies- The students will begin a unit of study of events that lead up to the Civil War. Next week, we will focus on the advantages/disadvantages faced by the North and South in the years prior to the war. This is a sensitive subject and will be presented on a fifth grade academic level.
Writing- The students will continue with the Writer's workshop centering on Narratives. As your child has "seed ideas", we encourage him/her to jot down their thoughts. These ideas make great details in future writing assignments.
Mrs. Rungruang's Subjects:
Math - We have been learning about math workshop this week and the expectations for the students and myself. This week we have also been learning about the Order of Operations, where the students know which operation comes before another to ensure the correct answer to the expression. Reminder: It is still very important that the students have their basic multiplication facts memorized to be successful in fifth grade. If you child is still struggling with those facts, please make sure they are practicing them daily.
Science- We have been learning about the Scientific Method this week. The students must understand the steps and be able to apply them. Our first graded lab was yesterday and today. Then we will move into a unit on plant and animal cells.
Won't you be our room rep?

Curriculum Night- Please plan on attending Curriculum Night. We will be presenting an overview of our year. It is a wonderful way to show support for your child as well as to meet and greet other families in the "Blankenship/Rungruang Community".
Check out: Please refrain from checking your child out during our Recess time (10:55-11:25). It is difficult to get your child's belongings to properly checkout when they are outside and need a bookbag/supplies.
Cell phones and devices- Students may have cell phones (turned off or silenced) in their bookbags. Please do not text or call your child during school hours. I will be sending home a Bring Your Own Device form in a few weeks. Our classes are BYOD participants. We will explain expectations regarding electronic devices at Curriculum Night.
Please label your child’s belongings with his/her name.
