This Week in Kindergarten

We had a great week in Kindergarten! The children are busy applying their previous learning to new skills and working on practicing their reading and writing strategies. This week we focused on reading fiction and non-fiction texts about bats and practiced identifying the main idea of the story. Students were also introduced to using a venn diagram to help them compare and contrast characters and events in stories. In writing, students used what they learned to write an informational piece of writing about bats. In writing, they are working on capitalizing the first word of a sentence, spacing between words, and hearing and recording sounds correctly in words. In math, we focused on understanding the meaning of positional words (in, out, over, under, between, in front of, left and right). We finished our study of maps and globes. Students enjoyed learning about the compass rose and how to use the cardinal directions correctly.

Coming Up

Next week we will continue exploring the main idea of a text by reading books about spiders. Non-fiction texts about animals are very effective in helping young children be successful with this comprehension skill. Understanding what a story is mostly about will help your child to become a better reader and writer!

Next week your child will begin to learn about the characteristics of science. They will be introduced to terms such as "scientist, hypothesis, data, experiment and conclusion." During this time your child will begin to observe and record data like real scientists.

Pumpkin Tasting Party

During the week of October 26-30, our class will be learning about the life cycle of pumpkins and reading many fun stories about pumpkins. They will also explore using time-order words in their writing to write about the life cycle of pumpkins. We will also be exploring our class pumpkin using characteristics of science and carving its face. I would like to invite parents to send in a small food item made from pumpkin on October 30th. Students will be allowed to sample the food items such as pumpkin pie, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin cider, etc. We will graph our favorite items and compare numbers using words such as more, less, fewer, and equal. Please email me to let me know if you are interested in sending in an item for our Pumpkin Tasting Party!

Library Day

Our class visits the library on Wednesday. Please encourage your child to keep their library book in the book bag and return it on Fridays. Students who do not return their books are not allowed to check out another.

Walking to the Park to Play

Our class will be going to the park to play on ________________________. We will leave the building at 9:15 and returning at 10:45. Parents are welcome to meet us in the bus lanes outside the building and join their child at the park. We will return to the building in time to eat lunch.

Report Cards Issued Today!

Today, your child's 1st nine weeks report card was issued. Please read the letter in the envelope explaining kindergarten grades. Return the envelope so it can be used for future report cards. The actual report card is yours to keep.

Guidance Lessons

Our guidance counselor, Mr. Young, comes in once every three weeks for a guidance lesson. We have been learning about character traits in these lessons. So far, we have learned about responsibilty, respect, and being dependable. We are always on the lookout for students who display these wonderful character traits!
