Online Learning at DLBHS
Information about carrying on during this time
From Mr. Bachmeier, DLBHS Superintendent
Introduction
Hello! There has been a great amount of change to our world these past weeks and it is now affecting us here at DL-B. I want to first thank the staff and parents for Thursday evening and Friday morning for working together to get the students their materials in an organized and efficient manner. Thank you, parents, for coming in on such short notice, and understanding that we are working with changing information that requires such notice.
With the Governor’s declaration on Thursday, March 19, 2020, we will not be opening our buildings to students until further notice. We will begin distance learning as announced last week on Tuesday, March 24, 2020. I understand there will be hiccups in this new process of education that we are providing, and I just ask for patience from everyone along the way. Please communicate with the staff or the administration and we will do our very best to rectify the issue that may arise.
When we are notified that students will be allowed back into our buildings, I will inform everyone of our plan and how we do so safely. I do want everyone to know that our staff did work hard to disinfect our buildings and buses if we would have been allowed to.
Breakfast and Lunch
On Monday of this week, we called every household in our school district to ask if anyone would like to have meals either delivered to their house or to pick up at designated locations. Every day during the week on days in which we have school, we will be offering a bag lunch and a breakfast item for the following day. If you would like to take part in this program it is for all school-age children and is free of charge. We only ask you to fill out the form on the front page of our website at: https://fs20.formsite.com/UnitedPublicSchool7/0ixojwcedy/index.html
Distance Learning Feasibility
On Monday while we were surveying people on their capabilities for remote education, we asked every household if they had internet and if they had a tablet or computer that the students could use. I am happy to say that we have an overwhelming amount of families with internet capabilities. We have been in contact with SRT and MIDCO to get the families that lack the internet the services they need to be successful. If we found providing the internet to be an issue in timeliness, we have provided alternative materials for education with the same content to those students.
When looking at devices, we have found a vast majority of our families have an item their student could use. If a student or family did not have a device or if there are not enough devices in the household for the students, we are loaning out Chromebooks to the students to use in this process at no charge to the family. If you find that your device does not work, or you have a need for a device, please contact either the elementary or high school and we will provide one for you to use during these uncharted times.
Events Information
I know that there are many other questions that people have in relation to events. Currently, all school events for sports and extra-curricular groups are postponed indefinitely in accordance with NDHSAA guidelines. Regarding Prom, we have decided to postpone it until Saturday, May 2nd. Regarding the Graduation Commencement, we are planning to have that event as scheduled. Please understand that we will look at these events as they approach and in relation to the Governor, CDC, and County Health Officials recommendations as to how we host the events.
Students
I want to take a second and just let you students know that I have been thinking of you and I know this is a difficult time in your life. Please understand that this virus is a serious matter and even though you are young and in great shape to fight it, it is imperative to relax and hang out at home. I know that many of you won’t believe me when I say this but it is a perfect time to communicate and hangout via Netflix Party and you can still keep in touch via XBOX Live. I know there are other ways to keep in touch but I just thought I would put some out there! I cannot wait to have you back in school and hopefully before you know it, high schoolers, we will be playing LAKER for Oreos on Fridays at lunch! Be safe and remember to wash your hands!!!!
Closing
I would like to take a moment to brag about our staff, school board, and families here at United #7 School District. Over the past five days, I have been witness to some of the best professional development discussions and innovative ideas on how we as a school district can best serve our students and families in a time of need. All our staff has been on board with the decisions that we are making. When looking at our school board, I cannot thank the members enough for having trust in the decisions that are taking place and the support that they have shown us throughout all of this. Finally, I want to thank you, the families. I have had numerous phone calls and emails from families that are supportive and willing to help and that has me overwhelmed with gratitude!
Finally, my hope is that all our students will return to our schools sooner rather than later. We have discussed this thoroughly and have tried to keep families updated as information becomes available. I have learned that plans can change quickly and that we need to adapt as necessary. I again thank every single person in our district for your support through this transition. I am honored and proud to be the superintendent of this great school district!
From Mr. Brown, Junior High Principal
Junior High Students and Parents/Guardians,
As we transition to a distance learning platform, I want to reassure you that we are working diligently to make this as composed as possible. All of our teachers will be operating via Google Classroom and thankfully, this is an avenue that all of our junior high students are competent in using. The first step in making this a successful transition is to make sure that each student gets added to each of their virtual classrooms. Please refer to each teacher’s narrative within the newsletter to get their Google Classroom code.
Assignments/coursework will be posted daily within each teacher’s Google Classroom. Please make sure that routine reviews of these pages are taking place so that we are all interconnected as best as possible. We will also be using Google Meet to allow students and teachers to have daily live interactions. These live webinars will allow students to ask questions to their teachers and to be able to collaborate with their peers about their classes. Access to these live webinars will be available on each teacher’s Google Classroom homepage. Each junior high teacher will be available for questions/collaboration from 2 PM – 4 PM each day.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via email and I will respond as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Mr. Brown
Junior High Principal

Thanks for picking up school supplies on such short notice!
Materials that were not picked up at the school will be delivered Monday.
What about late work and students who were absent last week?
We ask that students contact their teachers with questions about their particular situations. The staff at DLBHS is committed to working with each student to develop reasonable solutions.
The overall plan for instruction
Teachers will post their first lessons by Tuesday, 3.24.2020 with introductions and overviews. Students can start getting acclimated to this new learning format Tuesday morning.
The first assignments will be posted Wednesday, 3.25.2020. Students can get started on their homework Wednesday.
We are working to deliver clear plans that will move learning forward without overwhelming students and parents. We are thankful in advance for patience as we work out any kinks that might take place. The staff will be meeting regularly to discuss how we can continue to improve and strengthen teaching and learning.
Teachers will be posting their "office hours" in their Google Classrooms with details about how students can check in during live online meetings or contact the teacher through email and/or remind to answer questions, check-in, listen to mini-lectures, participate in discussions, or just say, "hello."
We are excited about these opportunities for students and teachers to interact simultaneously, but we also understand that students' schedules will not always be the same as their teachers' schedules. We hope that students will make efforts to attend these live sessions and office hours. We know that it will not always be possible for every student to attend every session, and so recordings will be available for students who cannot attend the live sessions.
All junior high teachers will be available through Google Meet from 2:00 to 4:00. Links will be provided in each teacher's Google Classrooms.
At the high school, we realize that students will be doing their work at many different times of the day and night, so we will post specific times when they can check in live along with other details for how they can contact the teachers. Again, details will be posted in each teacher's Google Classrooms.
If students have any problems with technology, they should contact their teacher. Their teacher will then contact the correct people to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.
How to get to Google Classroom
For students who are new to Google Classrooms, they need to do the following:
1. login to their @dlblakers.com account
2. click on "Classrooms"
3. join the classroom with the code. (all teachers have indicated their Google Classroom Code in their updates below.

We will be moving forward with this school year utilizing Google Classroom. To start you will need to gain access to these sites.
The code to become enrolled in the 7th Grade Reading Classroom is: HOJHKLN.
The code to the 7th Grade Language Arts Classroom is: C77SHTP.
You will be asked to log onto these classrooms every day to get your work. Every day you will have a new assignment, this may be writing a journal entry, reading a chapter of a book and answering the questions, or working on a paper. We are asking that you spend 30 minutes a day on this work, which will be easy to accomplish in 30 minutes. Throughout the week there will be assignments that you will submit, with more detailed descriptions on the Google Classroom posts.
I will have “office hours” every day, Monday-Friday, from 2:00-4:00 through Google Meet, the link can be found on Google Classroom, so that you can ask any questions about the material. I will also be available for questions by email or Remind. This is going to be a confusing time, but I know that we will get through it together and be stronger because we all got through it.

From Mrs. Meske
I will be conducting my classes through Google Classroom. If any parent is interested, I can send the code so they can see what the students will see online. This should be mostly all familiar to the students as we have been using Google classroom since the beginning of the school year. Students will be mostly using their devices – computers and phones to do most of the work online.
The Google Classroom codes are listed below:
Freshmen: P1: dysqho4 ............. P2: vxpx4mg ............. P6: fy6vvia
Sophomores: P3: jji5nuy ............ P4: ucsnw3c ............. P5: bk2zpsl
The units that will be taking place for the rest of the school year will be dependent on which hour the students have with me. The students will be continuing to read their own choice of novels for their SSR reading that they will have until the end of the year to complete. Extra alternatives have been made for students who need more access to book availability. All have been added to the list for expectations along with minor changes to the requirements for that.
Freshmen: The units that will be taking place for the rest of the school year will be dependent on which hour the students have with me. The units that will be finishing off the year include: Multi-Genre Research Paper/Project, Romeo and Juliet, and Poetry unit.
Sophomores: The sophomores that are currently on the Public Speaking unit will be recording themselves with either camera on computer or camera on their phones when presenting their speeches (there will possibly be other alternatives to support their speeches through other mediums). Sophomores that are on the Argumentative Research paper will continue as planned with their physical source and note cards and plans will only change slightly. The units that will be finishing off the year include: Public Speaking, Argumentative Research Paper, Taming of the Shrew, and if time, Novel Study with Fahrenheit 451.

From Mr. Karhoff
To the students of Mr. Karhoff’s room:
Dear students, WE’RE ALIVE!!!! I know these are uncertain times, but we will get through it together, and just remember, it could always be worse. The plan moving forward is for all of my classes to have a “home base” of google classroom. We will use this platform for all of our class announcements, assignments, tests, and deadlines. You will need to submit your completed assignments electronically. This will require you to upload a photo of your completed HW quizzes, quizzes, or tests, and link it to the desired assignment on google classroom. This will certainly have some wrinkles for us to work out, but we’ll get there.
So, with that as a basis of info., the rest of our announcements will be on the google classroom platform.
What you need to do NOW:
1) check your school email, you should have an invitation to join my class.
2) if you can’t find the invite, you will need to join via the class codes below:
Problem Solving period 1: zhoc657.............Consumer Math period 2: cvm4rd3
Calculus period 3: jjmwmu7.........................Alg. II period 4: a5alh27
Alg. II period 5: 7h5qset ...............................Advanced Math period 6: zhxz4a4
Enjoy your Spring Break, and remember to KEEP CALM and LAKER ON!
Mr. Karhoff
From Mr. Ystaas
I hope everyone is doing well in these strange times we are in. Please understand that I will
offer an open line of communication to any parents/ students as we figure out how we will
be moving forward. Don’t hesitate to email me a question. This is an opportunity for all of
us to develop new strategies to learn.
I have been instructed to set up an online classroom to keep our math education going
while we are not physically at the school. Here is an overview of how we will move forward:
The basic format of class will remain the same (Notes, lecture, lessons from the book, 1 or 2
quizzes each chapter, and a review and a test at the end of the chapter.) Now, we will conduct everything through google classroom. Go to the “classwork” tab to
find videos, notes, and other helpful documents. The code for my classroom is plafi3k.
Students will need to be much more independent and self-disciplined in their course
work. On the other hand, this will allow some flexibility as students find what works best for
them at home. Figure what works for you! Here is my guideline for how you can
progress through the class content:
Each day I will post the assignment, along with helpful notes and videos. Some videos will
be from youtube, some will be ones that I make. The notes that I have are meant to be filled
in, so in their current format, they may seem incomplete. The biggest part of the notes will be the new theorems/definitions/formulas.
Assignments will be mostly in the book, and I recommend printing off the problem sets so that you have that physical copy to refer to. Every so often, we will do our regular “spot check” by having students submit pictures of their homework.
We will figure out a day to have “questions day”. I will be available during scheduled class times to help anyone who may need it. We will do this through Google Meet. You may also schedule an individual video help session, during other days and times, by utilizing Google Meet and scheduling a time.
Quizzes will be taken through the google software. Tests will be given at the conclusion of the chapter. This will also be through google classroom. Right away, I will offer re-takes as a way to earn higher grades on quizzes and tests.
Again, please let me know if you have any questions.
Here are the Google Classroom Codes:
Algebra 1 --- Period 1: plafi3k.........Period 4: 6r3bthx
Geometry - Period 2: 4x35ty3......Period 3: rugrwlz......Period 6: vagz4li......Period 7: qqanr5w

Hello all, for my classes all the schoolwork and communication will be done through google classroom. As of Monday, March 16th, every student should have had an invite emailed to their school Gmail account asking them to join the class. Several students have already joined but I ask all students to check their Gmail and join the class as soon as possible. Communication of all directions, assignments, and materials will be done through there.
General Classwork Synopsis:
There will roughly be about two assignments a week that will be assigned and the due dates for the assignments will always be posted. I will be posting materials such as google slides notes, various information videos, and some assigned texts for students to learn from. From the information text, students will be given various assignments in which they either answer questions or write reflections.
Students should make sure to collect their class materials such as textbooks when the school designates them the time frame to do so.
If the email has for some reason been lost or you can’t find it here are the class codes, you can use to join each class:
World History: 4n73zp4............Sociology: 52lghju...........World Geography 9-12: 2c26zeg
**See Mr. Brown's information above for details about 7th-grade Geography
** I will generally try to check my emails daily to respond to questions or issues with things that are assigned. However, I will set up tentative “office hours” in which I will be on the computer between the timeframe to immediately answer any questions and to even live video chat if email can’t solve the question or problem. Any video communication will be done through Google Meet. **

Some things to consider would be stretching, push-ups, sit-ups, walking, jogging, yard work, housework, and games you enjoy participating in. It is very important to pay attention to your physical, mental, and emotional health, to help deal with the stresses of your daily routine being compromised. Take Care, and I hope to see you all soon!

DRIVER EDUCATION

First, be sure you have a Playbook, that you can pick up when you come up to the school.
This is a pass/ fail class, where you will be graded on the Chapter exams and the Final Exam, which is worth 100 points. You will need 60% to pass the class. We have 11 Chapters to cover, and I ask you to take the Entrance Exams at the start of each chapter. The tests are in the front page of your book. I will send you the answers, so you can see how you did. You will then read the chapter and be sent a Chapter Exit exam, which I will grade.
For those who are signed up for driving, I will contact you through the phone to set up a driving time. I will be driving with students in the morning. In the meantime, if you do not have your driving permit, now would be a good time to prepare for that. Stay Safe!

From Mrs. Hysjulien
Mrs. Hysjulien's Virtual Classroom:
Mrs. Hysjulien will be using Google Classroom as the main platform for all of her classes, and FBLA (virtual conference). Please make sure your child has logged in and accepted the class invite. Some of her classes (Word Processing, 8th Grade, Business Computer Applications) will require that your device has a keyboard; there is a question on the stream of google classroom for you to answer that question.
Please go answer that question ASAP so proper devices can be acquired if necessary.

In Ag Class, I will be utilizing MyCaert.com along with Google Classroom. Google Classroom will be our home base as far as sending out information or uploading powerpoints/videos. MyCaert will be used for sending out individual units/lessons each week or week and a half. Most of you are familiar with what MyCaert is already. For those classes that have not used MyCaert, I will send out a separate document in google classroom explaining MyCaert and how it works.
