Senior Families:
It’s not too late to do the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for your senior for this coming fall (School Year 2020-21)! If you would like help with this online form, you can get free assistance from ICAN. ICAN’s Mary Joan Dougherty has office hours in Sioux City (WIT), Orange City (Northwestern College – Rowenhorst Student Center), and Sheldon (NWICC). She is only in Orange City and Sheldon occasionally, so if that office works best for you, here are her dates for the remainder of the school year:
Orange City: March 17, 30; April 6, 20, 30; May 6.
Sheldon: March 23; April 14; May 5.
The Sioux City Office has appointments available nearly every other day of the work week. To schedule an appointment, you can call ICAN at 877-272-4692 and tell whoever answers which office you want for an appointment with Mary Joan OR you can call her directly at 515-402-4211 OR you can schedule your own appointment through the ICAN website: https://www.schedulicity.com/scheduling/ICARUB. Here is a link to the items you need to have with you to complete the 2020-21 FAFSA: https://www.icansucceed.org/media/cms/ICAN__ReadytoFile__FAN_handout_2018_C1CE7C5B02432.pdf. Also – remember that the student and one parent each need to create an FSA ID (if they haven’t yet) at this site: https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm. The email, username and password for each ID should be written down and brought with you to the appointment, and you should keep them in a safe place to use every year for the FAFSA. Each college has a priority date, by which you should have your FAFSA submitted, but if that priority date has passed, you should still complete and submit the FAFSA as soon as possible.
The Sioux City Community School District will again offer the ACT to all juniors during the 2019/2020 school year. Students in the class of 2021 will all be given the ACT test on April 21, 2020. This test will be offered at no cost to the student. Data from this exam will allow the District to analyze how curriculum aligns with the ACT, and in turn, help educators continue to prepare students for success. Attendance is required for all juniors on April 21, 2020. By offering the ACT during a day built into the school calendar, the District is able to ensure all students have access to take the exam. The ACT is beneficial to all students to help them make plans for future success after high school. While the curriculum taught up to this point has helped prepare students for the ACT exam, there are additional supports available for students to consider. The Sioux City Community School District offers ACT Test Prep courses, which are available at no extra cost to the student. The test prep course can be built into the student’s regular school schedule. If you would like to explore having an ACT Test Prep course added to your student’s schedule, please contact the school counseling office. Thank you.

NURSING INFORMATION:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Your child’s health and well-being are very important to us. With the recently elevated discussion regarding the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the news, we’re reaching out to you to share some information on preventive safety measures and our processes.
Keep in mind, at this time, there are no reported cases in Iowa, and the vast majority of Americans have a low risk of exposure.
However, given recent announcements by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control that Coronavirus may spread – and that cases of influenza are regularly reported – we wanted to share some additional information about steps the school district is taking as well as steps you can take to help prevent the spread of viruses. Please visit our website for timely information. This web page will be updated as new information or guidelines are provided by public health officials.
We encourage our students, staff, and families to be mindful of key preventive measures. The CDC also offers tips that can be useful in avoiding the spread of this and other illnesses.
Thank you for your support and partnership as we work together to maintain a healthy learning environment.

PARKING NOTICE: Just a reminder that there is to be no parking along or on any yellow curb, on a sidewalk, over a crosswalk, in front of any entrance, on the grass, in front of any gate leading to any part of the school grounds, in visitor parking, school vehicle parking or handicap parking, or where any cones have been set up, etc. This is so O&M, contractors, delivery drivers, bus drivers and (if necessary) emergency personnel can easily access those parts of the building and grounds. People that are parking incorrectly may not be warned going forward and take the risk of being towed. Also, if you are parking on the street please make sure that you are not parking in front any of our neighbor’s driveways, mailboxes, etc.
Students, as you may have noticed there are signs on the doors reminding you to not let anyone in the school. Due to recent events we would really like for visitors and students to ring the doorbell to get in the building. If we all follow this protocol we can monitor who is coming into our school at all times. Also, please do not remove these signs from the doors.
VAPES ARE ILLEGAL regardless of what is in them. Getting caught in possession with one is a violation of the student code and will result in school consequences, an athletic code violation (making you ineligible for athletics and activities), and a $50 ticket plus a mandatory court appearance from the police. YOUR AGE DOES NOT MATTER, it is a violation for all students. SOCIAL MEDIA PICTURES OF YOU VAPING CAN LEAD TO THESE SAME CONSEQUENCES.
This includes “Juuling”, Juul pods are not permitted on school grounds and the consequences are the same as any other tobacco products.
MINOR SCHOOL PERMIT: Students and Parents of students who are driving on a minor school permit should read over the school driving permit rules attachment. A quick few bullet points are:

- Students can only travel to and from their school between the hours of 5:00 AM and 10:00 PM; this rule supersedes the curfew law.

- Students cannot drive to an activity they are not participating in even if it is at their school of enrollment.

This is an online volunteer center for Siouxland, there are now more than 100 nonprofit organizations on VolunteerSiouxland.org, with more than 50 active needs for volunteers on any given day. It is absolutely the EASIEST way for students to find and sign up for volunteer opportunities. It’s also the easiest way to track their volunteer hours – confirmed by the organization. We’ve even added a field to volunteer profiles so they can identify which school they attend, allowing us to provide reports to the schools. And, it’s completely free for the organizations and the volunteers! Finding volunteer opportunities has NEVER been easier!*
