What is the Governor's Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership?
- The Governor's Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership, based on a sixteen-year program of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence, helps Kentucky parents become more involved in improving public schools to enhance academic achievement for all students.
Who will participate?
- The institute is open to all parents and caregivers of public school students and those who work with students. Participants must have an interest in the improvement of Kentucky public schools. Participation in GCIPL is by application. Each institute accepts 30 participants.
How much does this training cost?
- The institute is FREE to all participants; all expenses including meals, rooms and materials will be provided.

Attendance at all six days is required
- Note: Due to requirements in obtained funding, only applications from the 32 county service area of Morehead State University & University of Pikeville will be accepted for the Eastern KY GCIPL
- The counties are: Bath, Bell, Boyd, Breathitt, Carter, Clay, Elliott, Estill, Fleming, Floyd, Greenup, Harlan, Johnson, Knott, Knox, Lawrence, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Lewis, Magoffin, Martin, Mason, Menifee, Montgomery, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Pike, Powell, Rowan, and Wolfe.
Here is how we are making a difference in schools:
Food for Thought
Students learn how to make healthier food choices and improve their math abilities in an after-school cooking program
STEM Club
Parents and community members work with students by bringing hands-on STEM activities to them in an after-school club
Extreme Makeover
Parents created an outdoor classroom to be used by all students for hands-on activities across all subject areas
Training is guaranteed to be engaging, interactive and informative
Participants will:
- Enhance their leadership and communications skills
- Learn about the public education system in Kentucky
- Receive and learn how to read and understand the test data from their school and district
- Learn about achievement gaps in our schools
- Partner with their school administrators, teachers and other parents to improve student achievement
- Connect to an existing network of committed parents and community leaders
- Commit to leading at least one project in a school or community
- Receive support and coaching as they plan and implement their project
- Maintain an ongoing connection with the Governor's Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership (GCIPL)
