Library Learning with Ms. MacCullough
It’s been a wonderfully busy month in the library! Each grade is enjoying a variety of winter and holiday books. We’ve also all enjoyed the exciting adventures of Cornbread and Poppy by Matthew Cordell. Cornbread and Poppy are two mice who are opposites in every way; Cornbread likes to plan and prepare while Poppy puts everything off til the last minute. Poppy loves adventure and Cornbread does not. Despite their differences they’re still best friends. When Poppy doesn’t plan and prepare enough for the winter and is about to run out of food, Cornbread realizes he can’t let his best friend struggle with this problem on her own. So the two mice bravely forage for food on Holler Mountain where no one ever dares to go. This book has definitely sparked some lively discussions across all grades about bravery, friendship and the importance of planning ahead!
Second graders are learning to navigate our online library catalog. They’ve started to practice typing in the book they’d like to read in the search bar, seeing if it’s available in the library, writing down the call number and searching for it in the shelves (sometimes with a little help from a friend). In Library Enrichment classes, second graders have been exploring the Biographies section in the database PebbleGo and writing reports on a famous person of their choice (Taylor Swift is a popular option).
First graders are continuing to explore the key differences between fiction and nonfiction. In Library Enrichment classes they’re also learning to use PebbleGo as a way to do research on an animal of their choice.
Kindergarteners are continuing to learn about fiction and non fiction as they explore all the different types of books we have in the Hawthorne Library. We always talk about how to find a book that suits them best.
Looking forward to reading more wonderful books with the students and wishing everyone happy, safe and healthy holidays!
It’s twice as much fun to write your name when you can use LEGOS to do it!

A big thank you to our Holiday Boutique volunteers for all the work they did to make holiday shopping fun for our students. A welcome addition this year was the wrapping table where students were busy wrapping the gifts they selected.

Reminders
Recess in Winter Weather
Please be sure that you send your child to school dressed appropriately for the weather each day. Warm jackets, hats, and gloves are essential. Exercise is a vital part of your child’s day. Fresh air, exercise, and sunshine are essential for a healthy body and mind. We will make every effort for students to be outdoors for recess when temperatures and wind chill are above freezing. Please understand that as weather conditions change throughout the day we may transition from indoor to outdoor recess and vice versa.
Mount Pleasant Recreation Department
Each year our Mt. Pleasant Recreation Department offers after school clubs at Hawthorne. If your child will be attending a club, please do not forget to update School Dismissal Manager with those dates. You can register for clubs at https://www.mtpleasantny.com/recreation-parks-department.
