Bilingual/ESL Newsletter - October 2015

Adult Literacy Program

For the past 10 years MISD has provided ESL and citizenship classes to parents. We started out serving about 30 parents and now serve almost 100 parents each year. This work was recognized by Volunteer McKinney with the 2015 Spirit of McKinney Inspired to Serve Award.

We would like to thank Felipe Arellano for the work he has done coordinating the program for the past 2 years. He has put in many hours to ensure that our parents receive a quality program. YOU ROCK FELIPE!

Best Practices

Language Objectives

The goal of creating language objectives and sharing them with students is to provide a focus for purposeful teaching and learning. Teachers who are not accustomed to thinking intentionally about language development may struggle with this critical component. Below are training materials to support teachers who work with ELL students.

Materials for Training:

*This training has two sections. Each section takes about 30 minutes. If your campus already did the LIAG training in previous years, only section two would be needed.

Section One - ELPS & LIAG - Slides 1-23

  • Provides training of how to use the ELPS Linguistic Alignment Guide (LIAG). If your campus needs more LIAG copies, please let us know.

Section Two - ELPS & Language Objectives - Slides 24-43
  • Provides training on language objective expectations and how to write a language objectives.

Nuts & Bolts for Administrators

ELPS and Language Objective Training

Please ensure that all teachers who work with ELL students are trained on ELPS implementation, writing language objectives, and the use of LIAG to monitor student progress.

At the elementary level, your ELL Point People can provide this training.

At the secondary level, your ESL teacher can provide this training.

Training can be provided during a staff meeting or during planning time depending on your campus needs. A copy of your sign-in sheet will need to be sent to the Bilingual/ESL Dept.

Materials for this training are provided in the BEST PRACTICES section of this newsletter.

Testing Coordinators & TELPAS Coordinators - DUE BY OCTOBER 16

Information from Leighann

The Texas TrainingCenter ( is going away, as of October 16th.

Please login and download the 2015 Confidential Course Completion Roster and At-a-Glance Training & Calibration Report (both reports are on the main page in the center under Access Your Reports). I hope that last year, you all saved your certificates, so this will just be additional backup copy. You will want your teachers to go in and download their certificates as well. Again, they should have kept a record from prior years, but we want to double check. Please stress this to the new teachers on your campus, as you will not be able to pull up their records.

To do by October 16th:

___ Pull 2015 Confidential Course Completion Roster (TX TrainingCenter)

___ Pull At-a-Glance Training & Calibration Report (TX TrainingCenter)

___ Have teachers save their certificates from prior years (TX Training Center)

Required PD for Administrator

All Administrators, Assistant Principals, and Instructional Coaches will have four PD sessions that will prepare them in the implementation and monitoring of the ELL programs. These are required foundational trainings. PD Plan for Leadership Teams

The four PD sessions that every administrator must completed in the next two years are:

  1. Lost in Translation
  2. SIOP for Administrators
  3. Administrator Institute
  4. LPAC Framework

*BILINGUAL CAMPUS ADMINISTRATORS may have additional training through book studies or conferences.

I am currently developing an Excel sheet for Melinda and Suzy with all the administrators who have already attended these trainings. If you attended in the past 2 year in MISD, I have that information through Eduphoria. If you attended more than 2 years ago in MISD, at Region 10 or another district, please send me your certificate so that I can update my information.

These trainings only require attending one time, however we are considering how long is "too long" before needing a refresher. In some cases, such as with LPAC, the law changes a retraining is needed. I will share more information on this topic after some further discussion.

Three of out of the four professional development have upcoming dates in October.

  • Lost in Translation (At MISD) - October 21
  • Administrator Institute (At MISD) - October 9
