Cell Phones
At my last Principal’s Coffee we spoke about the influence of cell phones at school. We have found that a lot of our students are secretly using Snapchat, Instagram, and other apps during the day. The phones are also a source of bullying and other student conflicts. (We are not the only school in RCSD or the area that this is happening at).
Families are also texting and calling their students during the school day, which is not helping students to follow current cell phone protocols. Currently students are to have cell phones turned off or on silent once they are on campus. The cell phone needs to be stored in students’ backpacks (not in pockets or anywhere on them). If a student is not following protocols and a staff member sees this happen, the student must hand over the phone. If this is the student’s first time breaking a cell phone rule then the student will get the cell phone back from the office at the end of the day. After the first time, the phone is confiscated then a parent/guardian must come and pick up the phone from the office.
Parents suggested I poll the Kennedy community about the idea of collecting students’ phones at the beginning of the day and handing them back at the end of the day. Many of the other RCSD schools are doing this. This will allow students to focus on their academics, work on their communication skills in person, and cut down on inappropriate use of cell phones. Next week I will include a link to a short survey in the Cougar Connect where you can share your feedback, so start thinking about how you feel about this and any feedback you would like to share.
For emergency purposes students have access to the phones in the classrooms and if families need to reach students they can call the office and we can relay a message. Students may also come and use a phone in the office to call a family member if they need to.
