Three Weeks Left In Trimester Two

We have three weeks left in the trimester. Please make sure to encourage your student to turn in all assignments on time and utilize our before and after school homework help.

Panoramic Picture

This Friday is the 8th grade Panoramic Picture at 1:30 pm out on the field. Students received an order form last week if they want to purchase a copy of the class picture. If for some reason you did not receive the form, there are extras in the office.

Square Bowl

Students and their families had a great time at the Square Bowl last Tuesday night. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the event and to Mr. Baird for organizing. Below are pictures from the event, including the winning square.

No School on Monday, February 17

There is no school on Monday, February 17. However, we do have school the rest of that week. During block day that week students will take the STAR reading test for the second and final time this year. Like last year, we will have raffle prizes and a VIP Lounge as possible rewards.

Cell Phones

At my last Principal’s Coffee we spoke about the influence of cell phones at school. We have found that a lot of our students are secretly using Snapchat, Instagram, and other apps during the day. The phones are also a source of bullying and other student conflicts. (We are not the only school in RCSD or the area that this is happening at).

Families are also texting and calling their students during the school day, which is not helping students to follow current cell phone protocols. Currently students are to have cell phones turned off or on silent once they are on campus. The cell phone needs to be stored in students’ backpacks (not in pockets or anywhere on them). If a student is not following protocols and a staff member sees this happen, the student must hand over the phone. If this is the student’s first time breaking a cell phone rule then the student will get the cell phone back from the office at the end of the day. After the first time, the phone is confiscated then a parent/guardian must come and pick up the phone from the office.

Parents suggested I poll the Kennedy community about the idea of collecting students’ phones at the beginning of the day and handing them back at the end of the day. Many of the other RCSD schools are doing this. This will allow students to focus on their academics, work on their communication skills in person, and cut down on inappropriate use of cell phones. Next week I will include a link to a short survey in the Cougar Connect where you can share your feedback, so start thinking about how you feel about this and any feedback you would like to share.

For emergency purposes students have access to the phones in the classrooms and if families need to reach students they can call the office and we can relay a message. Students may also come and use a phone in the office to call a family member if they need to.

Don’t forget to order your copy of the Kennedy yearbook. The deadline is coming up soon. See the flier below for more details.
