Front Line Families Scholarship (Open to all high school students!)
Sponsored by Z-Medica, Stop the Bleed Coalition, and Amp Your Good
The COVID-19 pandemic has given us all better appreciation of the important role that so many play in making our country work – all of those who perform their work on the Front Line – making sure we have food, teaching our children, taking care of us in hospitals and caring for the elderly. These Front Line workers join the people we usually think about – our police, our firefighters, EMTs and those serving in the military.
The Front Line Families Scholarships are being offered to high school students who have a parent or guardian who has been on the Front Line this past year.
To apply, write an essay or make a short video telling us your family’s story – what your parent(s) or guardian(s) have been doing on their frontline and what you learned from that.

PB&J Foundation Scholarship
Traven Watase started the first PB&J Scholarship back in 2013 when he graduated Governor Wallace Rider Farrington High School. Traven was not a good student when he was in High School and did not have strong family support from his parents. In which he moved from Roosevelt High School (Honolulu, HI) to Kauai High School (Lihue, HI) and finally graduated from Governor Wallace Rider Farrington High School (Honolulu, HI). What he realized is that kids who do not have proper guidance/encountered an unusual challenge, are at a significant disadvantage that not a lot of scholarships recognize. Most scholarships you see are merit-based, financial need, or ethnicity. But students who encountered challenges in their lives may not be able to achieve merit-based benchmarks, might be in the middle ground of financial need, and not qualify for ethnicity-based scholarships. So because of this Traven decided to eat PB&J Sandwiches to save money on his budget so that he could pay forward a scholarship while he was in his first year of college himself. Traven did not start the scholarship because he had a lot of money, but he was willing to sacrifice a little and give what he could to help out someone going through similar challenges that he went through.
Our philosophy back when we first started was not to create barriers from students applying (GPA, Ethnicity etc…) because we will only judge the student by hearing their story and not disregard them before hearing it. Our scholarship is open to:
- Current High School Seniors studying in one of the 50 States or Washington DC
- Plan on attending a 2 or 4 year college next school year
What needs to be submitted
- Personal Statement
- 1 letter of reccomendation minium
- Transcript (GPA will not be considered and this is only to verify your student status)

2021 James Waters Memorial Scholarship
The James Waters Memorial Scholarship was created in 2017 to honor the late IMPD Assistant Chief James Waters and to continue his legacy of excellence, generosity and service. In 1990, Assistant Chief Waters began his dream of becoming an Indianapolis Police Officer, embarking on a career that would change lives and make the City of Indianapolis a better place. Assistant Chief Waters’ goal was to improve the quality of life for those he served. Assistant Chief Waters grew throughout his career; holding many positions and in January of 2017 was appointed Deputy Chief of Investigations by Chief Bryan Roach.
The James Waters Memorial Scholarship is an annual, merit based competition offered to both undergraduate and graduate students, that focuses on rewarding ambitious, driven, goal-oriented individuals with majors related to law, public safety, or social services and a background of continuous civic involvement or community service. This is a one-time award of $1000. Financial need is considered; however, all high school seniors, undergraduate students, or graduate students are encouraged to apply. Assisting others in making their dream of attending a college or university a reality, is the main goal of the scholarship committee.
