This will be an exciting week for Room 5! We will have our first trip to Camp Creek Run on Tuesday and celebrate Halloween with the Edison School annual Halloween Parade on Friday at 2:00. Please help at home to keep students focused and ready to learn during this exciting week.
Look for information about our trip on Tuesday! Information was emailed over the weekend and a hard copy will be sent home Monday.
Remember to find a Caldecott book for the WEB project. It is best to complete this project in steps (an amazing study skill) and not wait until the last minute! The project is due November 14th. Any questions? Email me!
Literacy
The second graders have been diligently working within the Journeys curriculum. This week, we will explore another kind of neighborhood – the classroom! We will consider the question, “What clues tell you where and when a story takes place?’ We’ll begin with Teacher’s Pets, a realistic fiction story about Miss Fry’s classroom. It’s a lively place for students and animals alike! Then, we will read See Westburg by Bus! an informational text about this interesting community.
Target Vocabulary: share, noticed, suddenly, bursting, noises, wonderful, quiet, sprinkled
Phonics Skills: Consonant blends with r, l and s, including triple blends (burst, trunks, split)
spin, grade, swim, glide, stage, just, place, last, drive, climb, drag, price, table, little, both **visualize**
Vocabulary Strategy: Base words and endings –ed, -ing
Comprehension Skill: Story structure – to tell the setting, character(s) and plot in a story
Comprehension Strategy: Visualize – to picture what is happening as you read
Writing Focus:
This week we will practice how to write descriptively by writing a description of our Halloween costumes (without naming what we are). We will then let the class guess what our costume is based on our writing! If we have written a strong description, then our friends will know our costume!
We will also continue our second unit on Narratives. We have learned to stretch a small moment, using details to make the story more interesting and telling what happened step by step. We have learned to write good leads to begin our stories. Next, we will continue to work on description and learn to write a close in ending that includes staying close in the moment or telling how we feel in that moment.
