Counselor's Corner!
Happy October to our Washington family! As we get into the swing of things here at school, I have been hosting new students in my office for a lunch bunch. I like to do this to show our new students that they are cared about and an important part of our Washington family. This gives students an opportunity to connect with their peers who are going through the same transition or ask questions about the school. Part of the new school year also involves me explaining my role as the school counselor to students and families new to Washington. The visual below gives you a comprehensive look at my work as the Washington School Counselor.
-Mrs. Ross

You can help raise money for Washington Elementary School!
It’s easy to support your school with items you already use in your home
or receipts from stores you already patronize!
Feel free to send any of the following to school with your student.
There are drawers in the hallway next to the lost and found to drop any of them off.
Each box top through Box Tops for Education is worth 10 cents. If each student turned in just 20 box tops during the year the school would receive around $800. Watch for Bonus Tops on participating products or as a coupon from your store purchase. Go to www.boxtops4education.com to sign up, enter sweepstakes and to see a list of the participating products. Box tops do expire so be sure to turn them in on time!
Through Kwik Trip’s Milk Moola program, each milk/juice cap and bag top are worth 5 cents. Please remember to rinse the caps and bag tops before turning them in.
Save your Hy-Vee receipts from both Mankato locations and they will donate $1 for every $150 spent through the Hy-Vee Kash 4 Kids program. The receipts must be dated during the current school year (Sept. 2018- May 2019) to qualify. Every little bit will add-up!
We have set up our PTO as an organization you can support through AmazonSmile. Once you select us as an organization to support, we will receive 0.5% of the price of your eligible smile.amazon.com purchases.

PTO Meeting Minutes: 9-17-18
Meeting Attendees: Casey Neitzel, Eileen Campbell, Cindi Hashimoto, Cherise Barker, Megan and David Martin-Leibbrand, Shane Drahota, Jennifer Brunz, Diane Winegar, Hilary Kent, Alison Carlson, Nathan Meeling, Mohamed Ibrahim, Shane Baier
May Meeting Minutes Approved: Hilary (1) Diane (2)
Treasurers Report: Over the summer we filed taxes. Took care of expenses from the Welcome Back breakfast for the teachers. Funds were received from Kohls and we were awarded a grant for $1000 from the Mankato Clinic towards the playground spiderweb. The school’s social worker requested cab money be added to the budget for transportation to conferences, which was done. Classroom budgets have been transferred to field trip budgets. Funding for the spiderweb was discussed and PTO voted in unison to contribute $10,000 immediately towards the purchase. PTO representatives (Cherise and Diane) from the Hopes and Dreams committee will meet with Shane and the planning committee to move forward with the purchase.
Teachers Report: All is well on day eight, aside from the warmer weather. The teachers were appreciative for the welcome back breakfast PTO provided.
Principals Report: The students will be very excited for the spiderweb moving forward. The additional swings ordered by the school are on back order, but they should be here by MEA break. Staff has had multiple days of Leader in Me training and the students have been setting goals and building stamina on their reading duration. This week will include the first Pride time for the students. The school has seen great improvements with behavior since instituting the Live, Learn, Lead motto. Majors (consequences) and Minors (corrections) have reduced from over 400 in the first year to 218 last year.
Committee Reports: Jennifer sent in $105 request from milk caps. HyVee receipt program has started again as of 9/1 through the end of May. Please send your receipts from your purchases at HyVee in with your kids! Amazon Smile revenue is increasing quarterly. PTO is considering another BoxTop competition in early October, David volunteered to help create a digital visual of the BoxTop program while Jennifer and Casey will have a visual table at Open House to show all products that qualify. Campbells Soup program is ending, and we are looking for more opportunities. Hilary and Mohamed volunteered to look into setting up restaurant nights through the end of the year.
New Business: Feedback from the Welcome Picnic – Weather was great, lines were shorter, but again we ran out of food and it seemed more chaotic. Suggestions for next year included avoiding the same night as East Football and having teachers/staff be more identifiable. PTO reaffirmed decision to only post PTO related material on Facebook.
Wrap Up: We are still in search of a Vice President who will serve as President next year. If you know anyone interested, please send them our way. There is a lot of support! PTO voted in unison to have Shane Drahota as co-treasurer. We are still in need of a yearbook liaison as well.
Motion to adjourn: Jennifer (1) Diane (2)
