KHES Update - Happy Thanksgiving!

iCan@KellerHarvel week of November 17

Food Drive Continues until November 21st

The Community Storehouse food pantry is stocked by food donations from individuals, churches, schools, businesses, corporations, civic groups and grants. 20% to 25% of the children living in Keller and Northwest ISD are living below the poverty line. Many of these children, who rely on the schools to provide them with meals during the week, show up to class Monday morning hungry.

KHES PTA is sponsoring a food drive to help the Community Storehouse restock their pantry shelves. Please consider donating food this week to help our local neighbors and friends. PTA has set up grocery carts in the front foyer of the school.

KHES Open House & PTA Meeting

Please join us on Thursday from 6:00 - 7:00 for the General PTA meeting followed by the KHES Open House. Join your child in their classroom and in the hallways to see examples of what they are learning in school. This is a special event for your child to "show off" their work. Your child's teacher has done some amazing things already this school year and they have worked hard to showcase the talents of all of their students. We can't wait to see you on Thursday.

Parking is always a challenge when we have such great events like this. If you are close, please consider walking or riding bikes if weather permits.

Early Dismissal Requests after 2:30 pm

We are closely monitoring the number of early dismissal requests that take place after 2:30 pm each day. We are noticing that some students are being signed out early on a regular basis. We understand that emergencies and/or appointments do happen however, we ask that you allow us to work with your child until the end of the school day. The last 30 minutes of the school day is an important part of your child's day as they might miss an important topic covered in their regular class or co-curr class.

Our front office staff continues to work very hard with making sure all dismissal changes, messages, and any other communication from you to your child is done in a timely fashion. All dismissal changes & messages will continue to be given to teachers at 2:30 each day. Please make every effort to communicate your changes on or before 2:30.

KISD Technology Outage

Keller ISD is currently experiencing a major system outage that includes KISD external and internal websites, email, Home Access Center, and all other network applications.

The outage was first identified Tuesday afternoon, November 11, with a failure of critical hardware in the District's Network and Operations Center. Phones are working normally.

We apologize for the inconvenience and any delay in communications this may have caused. If you sent us an e-mail anytime after Tuesday morning this week, chances are we have not yet received it. Please continue to call our front office if there are any changes in dismissal or if you need to speak to your child's teacher.

Our teachers have been agile, creating "Plan B" lessons that may have originally relied heavily on web-based resources; however, learning continues at Keller Harvel! Thanks again for your patience!

Give to Casey's Kids

Casey’s Kids is a program that was started to help KISD students who are in need. KHES P.E. teacher, Mrs. Shipp will be giving out Casey’s Kids paper shoes to students who donate a$1.00. Donations will be accepted from Nov. 1st – Dec. 5th. The class with the most shoes on Dec. 5th will win EXTRA P.E. time. All proceeds will go to the Casey’s Kids fund. Thank you for your support!

The Principal Challenge

National Young Readers Week (Nov. 10-14) is an annual event that was co-founded in 1989 by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. To make this week special, many schools read aloud a favorite children’s book to classrooms.

To fire up reading for the entire school, principals were encouraged to take one day out of that week and read from bell to bell for the Pizza Hut Book It Principal Challenge. All principals who complete the challenge can tweet or post a snapshot of their day and enter for a chance to win 101 copies of Jeff Kinney’s ninth book, The Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, for their school.

I took this challenge on Friday, November 14th. You may have seen a couch set up for my day of cozy reading. The colder temperature did not keep me from being outside! I was grateful to have the chance to read to so many students INSIDE. Students from Mrs. Tavarez, Mrs. Mixson, Mrs. Gremmels, Mrs. Brunson, Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Streeter & Mrs. Mickler joined me throughout the day in the front foyer....where it was much warmer!

Cafeteria Reminders

We are so excited to have parents and guests during lunch everyday. Your student loves being able to spend that time with you. If you give your child permission, they are able to invite one friend to eat with you. Our Watch Dog Dads who have been on duty that day are also able to sit with their student during lunch. Dads, with your permission and If there is a table available, your student is allowed to invite four friends to eat with you.

If any parent or Watch Dog has to leave the cafeteria before the end of your child's scheduled lunch, please be sure and have your child return to the lunch tables assigned to your child's teacher to ensure they have proper supervision.
