About Me
I love being silly and joking around! Most people have heard of "dad jokes" but in our family, they're "mom jokes". Speaking of which, what's the difference between a dog and a marine biologist? One wags his tail, and the other tags his whale.
The Klein Family
We live on 10 beautiful acres at the end of a dirt road in North Idaho. We have four dogs, 1 barn cat, 2 goats, 4 fish, 2 snakes, 1 bearded dragon, and probably about 20 chickens. We recently discovered that two of our chickens are roosters, not hens. When a rooster first learns to crow, it sounds a lot like a woman screaming.
Faith
A relationship with Christ has always been non-negotiable in my life. A very important part of my Christian walk has always been a relationship with a local church family. We moved several times as a child, and I have moved a couple times as an adult. In any new town, the first thing we do is connect with our local church. Finding a congregation where I can worship and serve is very important to me.
Choosing a favorite verse is difficult, but some of my favorite books of the Bible are the Prison Epistles. I especially like Colossians 3:12-14 which says, "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity."
Science!
In Oklahoma, I worked in a lab studying the bacteria Streptococcus gordonii. S. gordonii is a bacteria that lives in your mouth and forms biofilms that we typically call plaque! Although studying plaque formation may not seem important, knowing the mechanism of biofilm formation can help when studying other bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. P. aeruginosa often forms biofilms in medical equipment, and can cause infections that lead to death in immunocompromised individuals, specifically patients with Cystic Fibrosis.
When we moved to Idaho, I changed from working with bacteria to working with viruses! I worked in a lab that made test kits for various diseases found in animals. Specifically, I worked in tissue culture, and made sure that lab products were free of extraneous viruses.
My Expectations of You
- Look through each unit before you start, so that you know what assignments to expect, and how much time you'll need to spend on them.
- Begin each unit by reading over the project for that unit and gathering the supplies you need and planning your time.
- Refer to LiveBinder! When you open up a lesson, I *highly* recommend opening up the corresponding LiveBinder and learning from the additional resources we have provided for you as you go through your lesson.
- Answer in complete sentences with correct grammar and spelling. Remember your job is to communicate to me that you understand the material, and that is best done through clear and thorough communication.
- Do not leave blank answers. Try to answer every question, and refer back to the study materials if you need to do so.
Communicate!
- I am here as a resource to you, so please don't be afraid to ask questions if you are stuck. I will point you in the right direction so that you may find the answer on your own, or I might explain a difficult concept in-depth for you.
- The most efficient way to ask for help is to click the "Ask for Help" button in Ignitia. That makes it easy for me to see the specific lesson to which you are referring. Diamond and Platinum students may also call me on my office phone.
- If you choose to contact me through email (instead of the "Ask for Help" button), please be clear about which lesson you need help with. Please refer to class, Unit, and assignment numbers for clarity.
- Please refer to my coworkers and I as "Mrs." or Mr." and our last names.
- Read any communication I send you thoroughly.
Practice Integrity In Your Learning
- Remember the goal of your education is to learn the material, not just to get the answers correct. Make sure you are studying to learn, and not studying to pass.
- Do not submit blank work. If you have a question on an assignment, you may ask for help *before* you submit the work, using the "Ask For Help" feature. (Do not write questions for me in the text box where your answer goes.) Please do not submit any work until you have answered every question thoroughly. If you encounter a technical issue that is preventing you from submitting work properly, please contact me immediately.
- Do your own work. Part of learning is figuring out how to rephrase what you've read into your own words. When you copy words directly from a source without rephrasing them, it is plagiarism, which is illegal and will not be tolerated by Enlightium Academy. A single incident of plagiarism will be written up on your record, and after more than one incident, your parents will be contacted. Remember that if you are unable to communicate an idea in your own words, you may not understand the idea properly.
Office Hours
An occasional meeting me pull me away, but my top priority is helping students!
