The United States immediately recognized the triumphant new Columbian-Panamanian government, with which it quickly negotiated a canal treaty.

Booker T Washington Bust
Washington was among the premier of black activists. Washington's views "racial uplift" for the masses are criticized by many today as more conciliatory than in the definite interests of blacks in America. Dubois horribly disagreed with many of Washington's opinions, but also garnered a respect for him as one of the first true black intellectuals who tried to help the black race. Negroes must insist continually, in season and out of season, that voting is necessary to modern manhood, that color discrimination is barbarism, and that black boys need education as well as white boys." Washington and DuBois would continue to debate and be rivals til Washington's death in 1915.

Reforms were initiated by individuals, and at the city, state, and national levels of government.

Angel Island Immigration Station, sometimes known as "Ellis Island of the West," began construction in 1905 in an area known as China Cove. The facility was created to monitor the flow of Chinese immigrants entering the country after the implementation of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882. The Act only allowed entrance to merchants, clergy, diplomats, teachers, and students, barring laborers.
Statue of Liberty Torch Stairs
Many immigrants came to America seeking greater economic opportunity. Majority came from Eastern and Southern Europe. The reason for their coming typically rested on the push of hardships at home - including a lack of economic opportunity, religious discrimination and political persecution and the pull of the expectation of a better life.
Nanking Bell
By 1900 the Boxer Rebellion had spread to the capital of Beijing, forcing the many Western diplomats and Christians in the city to seek refuge inside their embassies and Churches. The Boxer Rebellion formed in response to both foreign and domestic internal tensions. Western powers like the US and the nations of Europe had come to wield significant commercial, political, and religious influence across China. After losing a number of battles to Britain in particular, China had been forced to concede trading rights to European and US commercial interests and to allow Christian missionaries access across China.
1700 Spanish Cannons
Panama was seeking independence from Columbia and the US agreed to support them in exchange for a strip of land five miles wide across the Isthmus, in perpetuity, to build a canal. Panama agreed to the deal because they were desparate for our help. The US has benefited from the Panama Canal, which makes it possible to travel from one side of the US to the other (by ship) without having to go around the southern tip of South America, which makes the trip tremendously shorter, faster, and less expensive.

Movies were an art form that captured the interest of the masses worldwide. As a new form of entertainment their success was extremely rapid. They entertained and made people laugh, making the world a happier place to live in after the horrors of WW. Early silent movies were often accompanied by live piano or organ music and provided enormous entertainment value to audiences captivated by the experience of watching moving pictures on the silver screen. Examples of Charlie Chaplin, Fatty Arbuckle and Mack Sennett set crazy standards.
