Can you believe it? It's July!

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at Castle Rock! We sincerely hope your summer has allowed some time for relaxation and fun with your Knights; we are excited to welcome students back in a short time for another wonderful year of learning and discovery. We believe that all students can learn at the highest levels, and we look forward to partnering with you this year to achieve our vision.


Though the spring and summer months brought with them much uncertainty, we have been hard at work to devise a plan to bring our students back in the most effective and safe way possible, following all guidelines from the Los Angeles County Department of Education and the Department of Public Health. Please read this letter carefully so that you understand the necessary precautions we are taking to ensure the safety and wellness of everyone at Castle Rock.


By now you have most likely read the email from our superintendent, Dr. Taylor, dated July 15. In it, he outlined our plans to begin the year with distance learning, and explained some notable differences between the emergency distance learning employed this past spring and our new, 2020/2021 Distance Learning model. For your convenience, a copy of this learning plan is attached to this letter. Please note that on Monday, July 20, at 3:00 the district will host a Webinar to explain the model as well as answer your questions. Our goal is to bring students back to campus as soon as it is safe to do so. However, some families may wish to remain 100% independent study/distance learning for the year. If this applies to your family, please confirm your commitment to this model no later than Wednesday, July 22 at this link: https://forms.gle/ih83PJVKJaVfZGDm9 You may, of course, wish to view the Webinar before making your decision.


Please re-register your child at Castle Rock now, regardless of which option you are selecting for this coming August. As in past years, we will again complete re-registration paperwork digitally using our district’s Parent Portal feature. All new and returning students must complete this process before school begins. You may wish to view a “how to” video located at https://bit.ly/2CexkQH:


  1. Go to https://parents.wvusd.k12.ca.us/aeries.net/ Login with the email you received this letter from. Click the yellow bar at the top of your screen. If you have forgotten your password, click “forgot password” and follow the prompts on the screen.
  2. Review each step and make any necessary changes. Please ensure we have an active email address for you, as postal mailings will again be limited this year.
  3. If you need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us or the technology department at the district office.
  4. As an added bonus, teacher assignments will be available in your child’s Parent Portal account. You will be notified again by me when this assignment is available. Please note that for student privacy reasons as well as health and safety guidelines, hard copies of classroom assignments WILL NOT be posted on our office windows this year. Also, once assignments are complete, your child’s teacher will contact you directly with information about how to join their classroom Zoom/Google Meet on the first day of school.

It is only when we work together that students may reach their highest levels of achievement and development; your involvement as a parent is so critical to their success.
