Second Steps Social Skill Curriculum Week 10! Make sure you fit Second Steps into your week!
Kindergarten - Accidents - an accident is when you do something you didn't mean to do. When you cause an accident, it's important to say so, so others won't think you did it on purpose.
First Grade - Accidents - an accident is when you do something you didn't mean to do. It is important to accept responsibility for an accident to prevent others from assuming it was intentional.
Second Grade - Predicting feelings - accidents happen. If something happens to you by accident, think about how it could have been an accident and find out more information. If you do something by accident, think about how the other person feels, apologize, and offer to help.
Third Grade - Making friends - focusing attention and listening to others help you make conversation. Making conversation helps you make friends and get along better with others.
Fourth Grade - Introducing emotion management - when you feel strong feelings, it's hard to think clearly. Unmanaged, strong emotions can lead to negative behavior and consequences.
Fifth Grade - Calming down - calming down emotions that are getting out of control helps you think clearly so you can avoid negative consequences.
**Reinforce, recognize with specific positive feedback frequently and in the moment.
**Please remember to place Minors in the appropriate tubs in the workroom as soon as possible so that they can get entered into SWIS in a timely manner. Thanks so much!!
**Minor physical contact was a top behavior concern during this past month. Please spend some time reviewing KAHFOOTY with your students.

Running Records
A running record is a method of assessing reading that can be done quickly and frequently. It is an individually conducted formative assessment, which is ongoing and curriculum based. It provides a graphic representation of a student's oral reading, identifying patterns of effective and ineffective strategy use.
Running records are different from informal reading inventories in that running records do not use a specified text. Teachers don't need to photocopy reading passages before students are assessed. This makes the running record not only a little more spontaneous but also a little more challenging. (www.TeacherVision.com)
Here is a video that is a great example of how to administer a running record with a student. It is not just about capturing the reading but the conversation before and after the reading that can be powerful!!
Information received through running records...
Reading strategies used at difficulty
Student's self-monitoring
An accuracy rate
An error rate
A self-correction rate
Running records can be used to:
Document reading progress over time
Help inform instruction
Match students to appropriate books
It’s important to let students know what their Reading Goals are so they can take ownership of their learning. Some goals might be... 1:1 match, check the picture for clues, go back and reread, get your mouth ready for the first sound, I can make my reading sound like talking (fluency), etc.
Guided Reading Binder - This is a great way to organize your Guided Reading Group lesson plans, running records, and data. (On the “Running Record” graph, you will need to adjust the levels to match our JCPS Grade Level Reading Level chart.
